1995 RMW heat gauge started showing overheat just under redline back in December. Used temp gun and engine when well warmed up is only around 185 degrees. Put in a new sensor for heat gauge. Still shows running hot even though its not. Any ideas?

The gauge pulls info from a different location than the PCM. Sensor for the PCM is on the water pump, sensor for the gauge is in the block. Just thinking out loud.

There was an issue with the part number for the gauge equipped cars at any of the parts stores. They all called for the sensor used for the idiot light, not for the gauge. Had to go straight to the dealer to get the correct sensor for mine. If it's the wrong sensor or the sensor has an open circuit, it will show full scale (hot) all the time.

If you have a FSM, there is a chart that shows the resistance vs temperature for the sensor. I would get an ohmeter and measure the resistance. Look that up on the chart and see if it's close. If not, change the sensor. If the resistance is approximately right, then you are looking for a wiring problem such as corrosion in a connector or a pinched wire.
