I was looking through the records of the 95 wagon I just got. The previous owner paid $31K in Aug 1995.
Paid $15K & financed the rest. I'm thinking that I would not have bought the wagon new. I wasn't aware
of the wagon back then. I remember I was thinking about getting a new SLP Camaro at that time. Also about
$31K or $32K. Ended up getting a Toyota Sienna van about a year later for $28K.

I loved them when they put the LT1 in them. I remember pulling up behind one and seeing the dual exhaust tips, and thinking "Impala SS in disguise", and really wanting one.

I almost did buy a new 95 when I found out they were going EOL. But for a plain Cappy the best I could do was 21k and it was actually not very comfortable and a lot to pay for a work car so I went looking for a used wagon. That is when I found my black 92 Roady with 50k on it. That still cost me 14 but was so much nicer and far more comfy I couldn't resist. I put another 160k of very hard miles on it before it went to salvage. It had way too many little things wrong with it to try and fix or sell.

I wish I could go back and purchase a new one. Back when these were new cars I could not see past the Impala SS. I ended up purchasing a new 96. Many years later I learned that the Wagon was an SS with extra capacity and fell in love with the looks, handling and versatility. Well worth the price then, and certainly a bargain as a used car.

Wagon on!

I was not looking for a wagon at the time. I had just purchased a Gran Marquis with a guaranteed repurchase on a Merkur Scorpio. I saved a bunch, so my purchase had blinders on toward Ford. The price is a lot more than I could have afforded at the time. I believe the value is there.

I remember the Scorpio. Was suppose to be a nice European Ford. Never got one because I
was a little leary about the reliability & maintenance cost.

I went to test drive an SS in late 1996 only to find out they were discontinued.... Sad I was going through a divorce and wanted something (even though I had an XJS at the time). Ended up getting serious about wagons in 2001, but ended up not getting the 1A2 I wanted and got laid off a week later so it was on hold until 2007 when I bought the twin 1A2 and started the madness.

I couldn't afford one back then anyway, but to Fred's point, the value was there, so yes if I had the money I would have. DCM Woody

I almost bought a early 90's wagon some years ago from an Olds dealer in Pennfield NY.  Caprice, LAB, no power anything!! In stead we bought a 1989 GMC Safari that seemed to fit the need better at the time (rear heat and AC).

I remember seeing my first 1994 (I think) Impala SS.  I was instantly in love.  It was in Syracuse at the Carrier Air Conditioner plant (that no longer exists!).  I believe it was the first 17" wheel on a production car since the 40's or so.  I test drove one in 1996 in Rhode Island.  What a blast.  It was not until 1999 that I was able to afford one.  After using it daily for 2 years, as road car, I retired it and began to modify.

Meanwhile one GMC begat a second GMC and it was time to look at something else.  Why not the wagon.  By this time I was hooked on the LT1 needed a toy hauler as well as a people mover.  Better mileage than the GMC as well.  GMC went down the road (about 6 years ago) and I got the wagon off ebay.

Oh and I do not ever plan on buying a new car.  Let the other guys pay the depreciation.

I was working for Triumph Motorcycles at the time and two of the guys I worked with has SS's as company cars. Needing something to haul a couple of motorcycles in the back they provided GMC trucks as company rides we used them up quickly putting 40 to 50,000 miles on a year.
After that I bought an Isuzu Trooper to do my hauling and dog duty. I loved the big box and after losing the trans I went with an SUV for 8 years and landed the RMW last August my first B-Body.
My last new car was in 1988 most new cars lose at least half their value in the first 3 years doesn't seem like a wise use of my money so I purchase pre-owned.
So no I would never had purchased my wagon new. Jeff

Knowing now what I didn't know then, I could have bought a '96 SS new, the local dealer even had 3 Impalas in stock at the time.

I just wasn't ready to commit to that kind of payment schedule, what with a new job in a new city.

With the benefit of 18 years of additional insight, now I'd probably lean more towards a ordering a WB4, and then take advantage of being able to purchase some choice Impala parts while they were still stocked.

Realistically though, there is no way I could have bought all my GM's when they were new, there is $168K of combined MSRP just counting those that were purchased used.

I think as was mentioned 18 yrs of knowledge/insight,. I would like to order the completely optioned out burgundy WB4 with tan, the rear CD player, and the T84's to go in it,. and have a new set of buick rallye's widened etc,.and the LT4 crate engine,...
Be fun to see if you could special order the car with 3:42's etc,..
would the ocd/motorhead thing kick in,.? disassemble things and powdercoat them, rhino-line the roadside of the inner fenders front and rear,....rhino-line the complete inside of the body shell,.sound deadening on the floors doors tailgate and roof,. grease hell out of the window rollers right away,. enlarge the drains in the rear quarters etc,.
OR,. order the fully optioned dggm caprice wagon, a set of T84's,. and add buick climate control, and a factory style sliding sunroof, cd player,. impala ss column, floor shifter and seats etc,.add the herb adams bars, proper wagon specific eibachs,. corvette brakes etc,.
Either way equipped with the knowledge we have today it would have been fun,.

I'm not sure my first was the one you would have ordered. My first one was a 92, replacing an 81 Electra Estate Wagon. (Nice car, but gutless engine and no rust resistance whatsoever.)

I had lusted over the RMW since the then-new body style came out, and was trying to figure out the financing. Then I discovered it only came with the 305, so I lost interest until the 92 came out with the 350. Of course, with a correspondingly higher price tag -- about $40K in Canada.

One day I happened to stumble over a 92 that was sitting on the dealer's lot, unsold because it was a 3rd row delete. It did not have the tow package by name, but had the LS axle, HD brakes, HD cooling package -- everything that was otherwise part of the tow-pack but the onboard compresssor and air shocks. Light saphire blue woody, with deep saphire interior. I still think it was my favourite RMW combination. Technically, it wasn't brand new -- sales staff had been using it as a demonstrator.

I noticed the similarity with the 81, dug out a tape measure, discovered I could transfer the 3rd row seats and made a low-ball offer that was eventually accepted. I say eventually, because the salesman gave me a song and dance that someone else was interested, then that he would have to talk about it with the sales manager. I wandered off to the car to grab my insurance paperwork, SWMBO wandered out onto the sales floor behind me. Salesman saw us depart his office, panicked, called to my wife, and hurriedly scratched out "the manager's" counter-offer and we did the deal.

The brown vinyl 3rd row seats got a coat of blue vinyl spray paint. Not quite the same colour, but held up well over 17 years of hauling kids, dogs, cats, etc. to the cottage, ball tournaments, camping trips, concerts, you name it. They outlasted the body and frame which eventually succumbed to the salt belt and time. Air shocks and a Class IV hitch were also added.

I let my son talk me into replacing it with a pick-up truck. I learned that I am just not a pick-up truck kind of guy and started looking for another RMW in decent shape. Two years later, I found the current 95 DCM woodgrain delete that you are admiring.

In late 92/ early 93 when I got to Fort Hood, TX, I brought a Nissan Sentra without AC back from Germany with me and was looking for a car with AC. Saw 2 cars (both about a year old) on a dealers lot. A 91 Caprice wagon and a 90 Taurus Wagon. They wanted $19 grand for the Caprice and $8400 for the Taurus. I went with the Taurus. Wife held onto that car for almost 12 years.

Would I have bought one new? Not a chance in Hell... I drove the 94 Impala SS (at the same dealership I bought the Taurus at) and that car was $24,500. That was too much for a "pretty" Caprice and STILL $8K less than the Buick Wagon.

lol, yesterday I was driving home and this guy in a Porsche comes screaming into the lane from a parking lot successfully merging into a very small gap in front of me at speed. He continued to have fun drifting around corners where possible but could never really get much speed due to heavy traffic. When I finally pulled up beside him my jaw dropped when I saw that he looked to be approaching his 90's.

In 2005 I came within a signature of buying a green '96 Impala SS with only 49K miles on it that looked PERFECT. It was at the then-new CarMax dealer here in Austin. They were asking $18K for it.

I bought a cheaper and newer Pontiac Bonneville instead. Didn't want to pay $18K for a 9-year-old car. Been kicking myself since......

Obvious answer: I was one year old when my wagon was new so most likely not.

Thought provoking answer: My wagon, no. I keep it for the memories and the attempt at turning it into something more than what it was.  Also because it was $500.  Its a blank canvass to start mods and upgrades.  In my case, its because it was cheap and not new is why I enjoy it.

As to the 94-96 9C1 Caprices, yes.  Growing up in NYC I saw them everywhere.  To me they looked cool and owning a cop car seemed like a thrill. Obviously, the idea still stuck or else I wouldn't have been looking for one back in 2011.  Fate landed me with my boxy instead.

I may not have been able to afford the hefty asking price back then but would have absolutely wanted it new. Owning from new or fresh trade in would have gave an opportunity to keep it in top shape and not be abused like some PO's have. I would have taken much better care of the ones I have if I had them from new that is for sure.

A $25k car wasn't in the budget for me in '91. That same wagon, theoretically priced at $33250 in today's money, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

No, due to the price in Europe. My Caprice sold new in the Netherlands back in the day for around 100.000$ (73.000 euro's give or take) Thank you, the taks man. That said, a low mile used one, yes certainly.

$100k, wow. That's a rich man's car. Of course, considering it has a 5.7L V8 & the price of gas
in Europe, it's like a big Mercedes or Rolls. So $100K is probably not too much.

Yes and No,

They would need to make some changes for me to buy it new today:
Passenger & Driver airbags
Back Seat AC
Different door design so the windows drop all the way

There are some other things that could be improved on, but as far as the basic package goes, Yes, I would buy one as long as it is priced in the $35,000 - $40,000 range.

94-96 have said bags. And the car would have to be 12" longer to move the wheel back in order for the door to come straight down so the rear windows could roll all the way down.

For me, I would make the dealer throw in a few extra driver's door panels to make-up for the crap panels on the car. Very Happy I would also arrange to travel to Texas and follow it down the line as it was built.

Absolutely, if I could afford it. I'd actually order it very similar to my car. Of course at the time I was in college and was in no position to buy anything new or even late model.

My dream scenario would be to have a connection at a dealership so they would order me a well optioned 1A2.

Just put a fixed patch panel in the door and the window would lower all the way :-)

We should start a list, I can think of a few other items...

Take a real hard look at the door, the window and the door jamb. Won't take long to realize exactly why the window cannot be lowered all the way.

Hint....The glass is bigger than the bottom half of the door.

My dad bought our 96 RMW new in 1995, and he would buy another one today if he could buy one new! It was stupid expensive, but it was a GREAT car!

Please see picture at below link... i did say to use a patch panel - half of the window doesn't move, the other half lowers all the way into the door. I know the way the door is cut becomes an issue :-)

Oh. Normally, the term Patch Panel is used when repairing rust. Hence my confusion.

Perhaps the rear door window from a Roadmaster Sedan can be made to fit.

If I would have been old enough to buy a car at the time, I would have bought the wagon I have now without question. I was all of about eleven years old at the time. Very Happy Even then, I loved wagons regardless of the maker and big cars in general.

Though my wagon is nicely equipped for a Chevrolet, I would change a few things. I would have ditched the auto-dimming rearview mirror, upgraded the radio to the AM stereo and high bias tape capable UX1, and gone for the remote keyless entry (if it was offered). I definitely would keep the 350 V8 and seriously considered adding the towing package. Yes, I'm sure all of this would have been expensive. To have exactly what I want in a car is important to me.

The auto dimming rearview mirror was probably amazing for its time, but in this age of blinding high intensity headlights, it doesn't get dark enough and it doesn't cope well with bright lights that are close behind the car. It also has a bad habit of darkening while in the garage, since it interprets the sunlight as headlights. Putting the car into reverse cancels the dimming, but it takes a while to turn "bright" again. As such, I usually just leave it off and put up with the annoyance of bright lights behind me on the road.

In the mid-90's I was looking at Impala SS and Silverado pickups. No kids yet, last wagon was years back.

That said, if I could go back, I'd order a dark red over tan '96 Roady Limited wagon with wood trim, CD, and tow package.

I don't think I would ever buy anything new. All the years I worked I had nice company cars, and even got to pick out the color and options. I probably ordered 10 new cars over the years, and never had to pay a dime. I just think new cars are just too damn expensive, and I would rather let someone else take the fall for the first few years. The only possible exception would be a lease. That way you get a brand new car every three years or so, and don't have to worry about service issues. Still, the cheapskate in me likes the fact I paid 5200 for my Roady wagon, 2000 for my 93 Fleetwood, and 800 (wrecked) for my 97 Cutlass Supreme Coupe that I fixed and has been my daily driver for the last 8 years.

Some new cars are expensive. But a lot of them are damn good deals. You'll have to shop among the
less popular models but you can always pay less than invoice. They say the car lose value as soon as
you drive off the dealer's lot but that's assuming you paid msrp. The big advantage of a new car,
beside that new car feel & smell, is everything works & is covered for at least 4 years or so.
