We have a newer travel trailer (30 foot) we are planning on using for a trip to Yellowstone next spring. Last night, I joked to my wife we should take "woodie"...our 95 Buick Roadmaster. She didn't find it a bad idea...so I ran some numbers. Staying inside the park (Old Faithful INN) vs. Camping in the park (super cheap), even with about TRIPLE the fuel cost of pulling a trailer, the camping trip is cheaper. Round numbers, high level: $4k camping and $5k wagon. 2 weeks, many stops at lodges/national parks, with kids. I do tend to be detailed, figuring souviners, fees, all that jazz. I have been within $100 or so of nearly all trips we've done.

Point is, camping has advantages (outdoors, your own space) but driving a vista roof wagon seems to have more positives than negatives (vista roof, wide open views, no trailer towing / hookups). Cost is a concern regardless, I want to do both...but for this first trip, wagon or camping?

Has anyone done a 4000-5000 mile trip in their wagon to Yellowstone? How was it?

Ha! I thought that too...we bought bigger due to more kiddies...hard to call it roughin' it when you have microwave, shower, fridge, tv, sep bedrooms...oh well.

Oh, reason the wagon based trip is more is that the yellowstone lodge is 250/night or so. yikes.

WOW that very pricey!! the wagon's leg room is not great if the kids are over 5'5" or so and get a roof top carrier, the travel smell can be kept down that way!! Shocked

We did a 4500 miles trip this spring from Portland, OR to the Grand Canyon. (last year we went to Yellowstone, but that was under 2000 miles.)

The trailer was great, it helped keep setup to a minimum each night, and the girls went down quickly in the same bed every night.

We get 12 MPG with our Tahoe towing our 1966 Streamline 26'.

The biggest trick for us was getting up and out every morning. If we had a plan things went smoothly.

Go for it!

put some 3:73's in the wagon,. shift kit in the trans,.

it would pull the 30ft ok.these wagons have the same underpinnings basically as a 1/2 ton truck.

You don't need 3.73, we have them in the Tahoe, but the Tahoe has like 31" tires so it needs them.

3.23 maybe. We'll see how we do with the 2.93.

Did a 3000mi round trip this summer with trailer (25ft) to the south of France. No problem with our '93 Caprice, standard gears and we have the biggest trans cooler we could find. We get around 13-15 mpg.
