I was doing some junkyard scrounging today and finally found a factory CD player to replace the cassette only (with equalizer) in my '96 RMW. I've found plenty of them before but they usually seem a little worse for the wear. This one is nice EXCEPT for the preset buttons. Some of the black is worn thru showing grey underneath. The cassette in the car now is in excellent shape, as are all the buttons. Is it possible to swap the buttons from one to the other? If so, how? I see that the face trim easily pops off but beyond that I'm lost.

Ive touched them up with spray paint...just enough to hide the white. Make sure you scuff it a little first.

Like you figured out, the buttons are switchable.  Take the face off of the worst one you have for practice.  Over a clean work surface, aim the face down, and undo the face to come off.  I say aim it down because if you do not and just pull the face off, all of the buttons will just fall out of place.

If you do this, bench test your radio to check that all of the backlight bulbs are working.  They can be replaced but need to be de-soldered out.

I did a write up on it in the past that you could search for.

Lance, I actually already tried to pop the buttons out on one off the ugly radios in the yard. After removing the volume knob and unclipping the face I tried prying on the buttons with my pocket knife. They didn't budge. I didn't spend a lot of time trying though since it was almost closing time at the yard. I found the thread you mentioned about soldering new bulbs in. https://gmlongroof.4umer.com/t4401-radio-light-burned-out

I tried again this morning and realized the face trim doesn't pop off the radio by itself.  The entire display/control face comes off. I must have broken the crappy one in the yard. I can see the face trim is attached to the face from the the rear with several small screws. Maybe the buttons will come off after those screws are pulled.

I temporarily installed the radio and discovered that a couple of the backlit lights are out. I'll just live with it for now until I can gather some new LED's.

Here's a link to a video of how to R&R Roadmaster radio. https://youtu.be/U_-ECgi1_ag

Hoosier:

Here is the link. This described the front of the radio and the buttons.
