Help I'm stuck Empty
PostSubject: Help I'm stuck   Help I'm stuck Icon_minitimeSun Mar 01, 2015 8:01 pm

My car started and then after a 15 seconds or so it quit. When I tried to restart it it turns over but either won't fire or it burbles and shakes for a little bit and dies. I have my OBD2 adapter along and the Torque program. It shows four codes:

P0410 Secondary air injection

P1661 Output Circuit check signal low

P0400 EGR

P0103 MAF hi input

I'm in a parking lot.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Russ

Gut reaction is a fuel issue. What's the pressure?

P1661 is the check engine light failure. (check the connections at the PCM)

You are correct. The fuel pump was bad, the fuel injection pressure regulator was leaking, and the ignition control module housing was cracked. The fuel tank sending unit works but is ancient and held together with plastic tie wraps.

Hopefully it will behave for a while after this.

Now that my beautiful beast has a new ignition control module, fuel pump, and sending unit how long can I expect them to last?

I am appalled by the difference in price between getting parts from Rock Auto versus through a mechanic shop!

Agreed! Sometimes they get so incensed because you call them on it.

Make sure the mechanic put thermal compound past on the back of the ICM (and not dilectric grease), or you will be replacing that ICM again shortly.

Thank you Jay, they used dielectric grease. I would not have caught that.

Not the same. You need the thermal paste like you would use on a computer processor.

Does thermal paste come with the ICM?

Thanks,

Russ

Maybe some brands do. Mine didn't (Standard Motor Products). But you can buy it at any electronics supply or computer repair shop.

Buickwagon suggested on the Buickroadmaster forum that the check engine light bulb may have been removed in the past. Tonight I checked and sure enough it was. I replaced it and of course it is now on. The code P0174 system too lean cylinder bank 2 now shows. Perusing the Internet reveals that one of the causes could be an unseated oil dipstick. I checked and the dipstick was not all of the way in. Tomorrow I'll see if that fixes it. The car runs great. Btw after a 3000 mile trip it didn't use any oil at all.

My AC Delcos have always come with the paste.

The only reason I know you have a 96 is because you mentioned your OBD2 scanner. You should probably create a signature. If you have a scan tool, try to see what the O2 mV are doing. You might have an O2 problem. If you are seeing lean on one side the other side might be super rich. Did you notice any chance in your gas mileage ?

Thank you Jason. Signature created.

I do have an OBD2 bluetooth adapter and the Torque app. What is O2 mv?

Mileage has been reduced to 18 and 19 mpg for the last two tanks, down from around 22 but I was also going around 80+ mph instead of the usual 65-70.

Thanks,

O2 is the oxygen sensor and the mv is milivolt. The O2 sensors fluctuate at a specific rate, when they go bad, they tend to "slow down"

as for mpg, I averaged 18 for the 7 years I owned my sled, but mine was modified and I never drove under 80....

My sedan gets 24 mpg overall and 27-28 mpg on the interstate but I usually drive 1-2 mph under the speed limit. Things are quiet there and I usually can keep it on cruise control for a long time without interruptions.
