I ran across this one today. It's being sold by a dealer. He wants too much for it at $2800 but maybe he'd come down. Do you guys think its worth pursuing with this rust?

Here it is:

And the rust:
Both wheel wells have holes in the picture below.

Driver's side door frame

drivers side tailgate

Underside

It has all the good options; GW9, G80, all the tow pack goodies. 126,000 miles. It doesn't seem too terrible, but that engine bay wheel well rust seems odd.

EDIT: I decided to pursue it anyways and the guy said he'd do 2k. Seems like an ok deal but I'll probably come back with 1800 if I go see it. Still let me know if that rust seems too crazy. I had a really rusty jeep so to me it doesn't seem that bad.

Nice shape but....the rust you cannot see will be worse than what you can. Already there appears to be complete rust out at tail light and washer fluid fasteners which means those andother things are going to start coming out of position fairly quickly.

I dealt with Midwest salting and you just need to know when the car officially becomes too rusty to be safe.

Looks like a lot of structural rust but i'm spoiled by north Louisiana and southern CA cars for the last 20some years. Yeh. i'm spoiled that way.

Do yourself a favor, pull the rear lower seat cushion and look behind the cargo area covers over the wheel wells.  You'll probably find a lot more than you'd like to see.

The rusted areas are definitely areas of concern and are great bargaining chips. The inner fenders are bolted in place so replacement ones can be sourced and "just" swapped. The tail gate is also a bolted on part the can be replaced with a rust free one as log as the style of "wood" is the same.
Do you have any experience with auto body repairs? A lot of shops won't even consider fixing rot especially on a car that old, if they do, expect high labor costs, shoddy "mud it up with Tiger hair" filler work (that won't last very long) or both.
The '94 Caprice I just bought 2 weeks ago has a lot more rot in the rear wheel wells than I thought as seen just yesterday after removing both rear wheels. Luckily I'm an expert at those type of repairs, even though I don't exactly love doing it.
Good luck.

No. nonono

Too much rust..I bought my Olds for 2k and it only had some rear inner wheel well rust, and a small bubble on the b-pillar. It's like an ice berg, it's 10 times bigger under the surface.

Keep looking.

I agree with pulling the middle seat bottom. The rot in my car was so bad there, it broke my love of the vehicle as it stopped the T56 plans and forced the installation of the "For Sale Sign" mod.

Rest of the car was pretty much rust free.

I've been looking at the Florida to South Carolina stretch and there isn't much. I'll keep an eye out.

Expand to Atlanta area. That is where the good ones show up (where mine came from too). Good place to get tickets to fly into as well. So is Charlotte.

A year or so ago the Florida CL was packed full of wagons. The year I move down, they have all but disappeared.

I got a rust free one in Atlanta for 2K. That one is a sub-$1000 car IMHO with that nasty cancer rust. And speaking of clean rust free southern cars... all you northerners stop taking all our good cars!!!

Yes, pass on that one, it's a parts car as Nick said.

A friend just bought a '95 Caprice wagon with 80,000 miles, and very little rust just outside of NYC for $2500. Be patient, have as much cash on hand as you can, and move quickly when a nice car come up for sale cheap.

A couple more options have popped up. The one I'm most interested in is in nice shape with very little rust. Front end suspension and steering components have been replaced, the interior is good, paint is nice. It drives great but idles just a tiny bit rough. I think that it probably needs a tune up. It's been about 4 years apparently. The ac compressor cycles on and off so I suspect it just needs a recharge. The only issue that has me a little worried is in the rear when you go over bumps there's a muted clunking sound as it absorbs the unevenness of the road. The front shocks have been replaced but not the rear. My other car has this same issue and it turned out to be the shocks. What do you guys think it could be? I pushed on the bumper and didn't hear it while standing still.

Pictures needed!

How many miles?

Rough idle could be as simple as plugs and wires, but could also be the OPTI which along with the plugs and wires could add up to @$800.

I don't have any pictures of this one but it's nice and clean. The idle isn't very rough. You can just barely feel that it's running. I'm just comparing it to a couple others that I've driven.

What do you think of the rear clunk?
