The Pontiac is about 14" longer than the RMW.

Great comparison. I always thought the length difference was mainly from the nose and this goes to show that. If you look up the stats, you will find leg room, headroom and cargo capacity to be about the same. The extra length was the front end which was smartly and efficiently trimed down and made aerodynamic.

Yes that things hood is huge, but there is a big difference in cargo capacity too. The clamshell wagon holds about 13 more cu. ft. than our newer wagons, and most of that is noticeable in length; 99" max from front seatback to inside of closed tailgate, compared with 89" on the '91 to '96. That means the clamshell wagon can fit a 4x8 sheet with no problem. I found there's enough room in my Pontiac to still drive in reasonable comfort even with the seat all the way up. Although I will tell you, I did (once) fit a 4x8 sheet of paneling in an RMW, laying flat, with the gate closed. Dave and I were building a shed. We found however, at 6'-3" tall, the seat being all the way forward made the car undrivable. We figured out, the best way to haul plywood in a newer wagon is to leave the gate closed, and have the plywood on an angle resting on the top of the gate, and then it only sticks out the glass area by 2 or 3 inches, and you just bungee the glass down.

It's funny how "modern" the Roady looks compared to the Pontiac. It's so much lower, and lacks the shoebox look of the Pontiac. Great picture, by the way.
