Thickness of chassis Empty
PostSubject: Thickness of chassis   Thickness of chassis Icon_minitimeSat Jul 23, 2016 3:02 am

Hey guys,

I've the feeling that the chassis of my '91 Caprice wagon is slowly getting thinner due to rust.
How thick are the chassis beams originally? Or what is the minimum safe thickness?

Most of the chassis appears to be about 1/8 inch thick. I do not know the minimum thickness for safety. If you get to FL, you may be able to pick up a chassis in a junk yard (if you are inclined to fix it). On that note, if the chassis is that rotten, the rest of the car bottom is probably pretty bad as well. Maybe a southern replacement car is in the cards for your future.

Thanks, I've measered my chassis and at the weakest point it's about 0.086 inch thick, or 2,2 mm. That's on the bottem of the chassis beamer near the rear tire. Is that save to keep it that way?

The area you are measuring must be entirely bare and free of rust to get an accurate measurement. Crusty rust is many times the thickness of the metal it is destroying. Keep in mind, that like the sheet metal, there will be areas that are affected much worse than other areas. Unfortunately, these will be the areas where you need strength the most, like where two pieces join, or around where the suspension attaches.
