Tensioner or Pulley for Clutch fan belt Empty
PostSubject: Tensioner or Pulley for Clutch fan belt   Tensioner or Pulley for Clutch fan belt Icon_minitimeFri Jul 01, 2016 3:05 pm

While removing my less than two year old water pump yesterday the tensioner for the clutch fan belt fell on the garage floor (I should have had a rug underneath) and some of the pulley cracked off. I would be able to epoxy the broke off part of I could find the part. GM and Gates no longer sell this part or the pulley. Does anyone have either part? If so how much?

Thanks

Haven't bought one lately, but I'm pretty sure sure you can get those at NAPA or most auto stores.

Nobody makes a replacement for them. You may be able to use another pulley. I am headed to the junk yards this weekend. The pulley has ribs on it, so I will look around a little to see if there is something that will work. The bearings are usually the same for most of the pulleys that GM uses. The bolt that holds the pulley is probably a left hand bolt if my guess is correct. What is the diameter of the pulley?

I saw that someone was selling a fan assembly from a RMS recently, and it may still be available. I do not remember if it was here or on ISSF. You might want to check the parts for sale in both forums.

u can use a regular pulley off a non mechanical fan car,. it's metal, and smooth,. but it will work,.

if you only chipped the edge off, i wouldn't worry about it,. the belt doesn't walk very much at all,.
but if its through the belt line,. i,d change it out,.

Fred,

The Dimensions are 65mm outside diameter, inside diameter 17mm and 18mm deep 4 ribs.  I have tried to join Impala SS repeatedly but get the message back sayingitdoes not like my e-mail address.  When I called Gates the person with whom I talked looked to see if there was any other similar sized pulley, only smooth ones.

This has made me decide to finish off my one + year prject to convert to duel electric fans using the shroud and fans from a 2008 Caddie Escalade with towing package.  I have the shroud all set up, now just to hook up the electronics, no small job on location.

Thanks,

Chris

Buicknutt,

Thanks.  I already obtained one from Fred Kiehl.  If I ruin this one I will need to get one from you.  I installed my duel electric fan set-up from a 2008 Cadillac Escalade.  Towed my 27' Travel Trailer to the dealership for safety inspection.  Fans never came on as the outside temperature was 61-63F. Pulled OK through the hills of western PA.

Was it a simple swap?

Care to share some more info on this?

phantom 309,

This was no drop in.  I had to remove ~1/2 of the shroud and pop rivet in Aluminum angles and Aluminum sheet.  I wired up relays direct from the battery through two 40 amp maxi fuzes using 10ga wire.  I also ran the green primary negative 20 ga wire from the PCM through the the wire bundle requiring untaping then retaping the bundle as far as the back side of the engine.  I then ran the green wire with the hood light across the wiper transmission then into the fuse box.  Split the green wire into two then out of the box, one into the relay then other to the top of the wiper transmission in a bundle until I can figure out where to run through the firewall along with the blue secondary fan wire.

The fan shroud set up has 1/8" refrigerator foam to make an air tight fit to the radiator.  I cut a spare top tow package shroud to fit over the radiator and new shroud.  Fan shroud and top tow package shroud are bolted together.

Two fan relays and two 10 amp fuse holders for 20 ga wires are attached to the modified Escalade shroud.  The 40 amp fuse holders are behind the overflow bottle next to the AC drier.  When I remove the shroud for winter storage I will take pictures and post when I figure out how to.

All electrical connectors are delphi (Packard) auto waterproof connectors.
