Do LT1 and TBI use the same gas tank?

I'm looking into having a gas tank made for my 69 chevy van project and I'm considering spec'ing it to use a wagon pump module..... initially, Ill probably use wagon TBI, but may want to upgrade to a higher pressure direct port setup (like LT1, right?)
So I want to find out if the modules are interchangeable between TBI and LT1 wagon gas tanks.
I'm also hoping somebody here knows the ohms range of the fuel senders in our wagons.....
I can buy a ready made tank from tanksinc.com that has a variety of modules and level senders, installed separately, but their stuff is way pricey compared to having a tank made and using a wagon module.

The tanks are the same physical dimensions, however, the sending units and fuel pumps are different.


Also I never cut them up side by side but I 'think' the lt1 tanks have more or better baffLes as I have never fuel starved one in hard cornering even when low on gas. The tbi tank thougg, under 1/4 tank in everyone I owned would stall on spirited cornering

The sending modules are interchangeable on the tanks as I put an LT1 tank in my 91 with the existing sender that was in the car

Little digging in the FSM tells me that the fuel sender range is 0-90 ohm (empty to full) on the 91 TBI module......
I'm wondering if the modules are the same except for the fuel pump (?)

The early TBI senders were fixed all metal units. The later (93-96) The fuel sender works on the same range for the fuel gauge. They can be interchanged, but the hose between the pump and the output line on the early ones must be a straight fuel line to keep the pump in the bottom of the base. The later ones have a plastic container for the pump, that can move up and down on the return line tube. This requires a flexible hose that loops to allow the movement. I have used either one in my 91 and 92 OCCs. The newer style holds the pump in controlled contact with the bottom of the tank at all times.

The tanks may have different baffling to control the slosh. You also have to consider the flexible nature of the tank itself, because it could balloon with pressure allowing the older style to increase the distance above the bottom of the tank. This could cause some fuel starvation in hard turns with lower fuel levels.

The fuel pump is the determining factor in the sender. You can mount either in the new ones, or old ones, and they will work in any wagon. The newer style may help in fuel starvation issues.

I think the difference in baffling is the fact the later fuel senders are of the bucket design, there is a small siphon off the fuel pump that sucks fuel into this bucket and then the fuel sucks it out of the bucket it's installed into. Great for older retrofits as it's all self contained, and dirt cheap used, I have several around from parted out trucks.

I actually got lucky and scored a new tank off CL that someone did this conversion too, got it cheap, for my gf's Z28.

I went to RockAuto.com and looked at the Lt1 pumps and can see the difference......I actually would be having a tank made to fit the van and the module and choices of pump specs is a concern to me because I want to have choices of injection systems..... Tanksinc has a tank for 53 chevy that is pretty close to the right size for the van, but the fill tube configuration isnt quite right and their fuel pump modules run over $200 and don't include the sender (another $40)..... The van does use a 90 ohm sender, so making wagon stuff work will be no problem!

When I replaced the pump on my 92 OCC I was surprised to see someone had already put a newer sending unit in that car (bucket design). I can't say for sure if the tank was swapped or not though.
Also, in a pinch I used a TBI sender on an LT1 car, just put an LT1 pump in the TBI sender and rolled with it.

I thought the LT1 tank was 1 gallon smaller than the TBI tank?

All GM gas gauge senders from the 60's on are 0 - 90 ohms. The low fuel light comes on when the sender hits 10 ohms.

Actually, GM senders (in trucks, at least) were 0-30 ohm until 1967 and then went to 0-90 ohm.... When you buy a tank from Tanksinc.com, you can choose based on the model year of gauge you'll use....

Interesting that an LT1 pump would work okay on tbi......

The pump does not work, only the sender.
