Need Help! Crackling Speaker

Hey fella's,

The passenger side rear speaker on my '91 Roady wagon is making a weird crackling sound when I have the radio on. I took the speaker out and inspected it, but didn't notice any wires broke, loose, or bad connections. My car has 50,000 miles on it, so it seems weird that it has speaker issues already. Since my passenger side front speaker isn't working either, it really makes listening to the radio unpleasant.

Anyone know what that might be or know how to fit it?

Not real uncommon for those GM factory units to loose a channel. Did you try it with another speaker? I would try that test first.

True your car has only 50K on it, but it's pushing 30 years old. On a related note, I bought a low mileage GMC Yukon XL (Suburban). One out of the four speakers worked. I pulled everyone out, they looked good, but apparently were not. I replaced all four and everything works as it should.

I read up a little more on the problem with a Google search. I'll try connecting the crackling speaker to the wire on the drivers side and see if it still crackles. If it does, the speakers bad. Sounds like the coil inside the speaker can get blown and start touching the walls. If it doesn't crackle with the other wire, the speaker is fine and it may be a connection problem or the radio itself. I'll let you know what I find out after I troubleshoot. Thanks for the help guys!

At that point, why not just replace the speaker?

They're junk anyway. Even with the stock unit, you'll see a big improvement with almost any aftermarket speaker.

it's a 27 year old paper speaker. It may be in bad shape.

The radio in my caprice wagon was faulty and had pretty much the same Sx you describe.
