PostSubject: Possibly getting another Wagon.   Tue Jan 23, 2018 11:03 pm

Going to look at this 94 Caprice tomorrow. It has a few cosmetic issues, but my biggest concern is the gauge cluster. Owner claims that the speedo and odometer are not working. Has anyone had good luck repairing the digital part or should I just find another one? Also, is there any other way of determining mileage? This is the car I am going to look at.

There are a number of services advertised on eBay that will repair the cluster.

I wonder how many Caprice wagons were equipped with woodgrain... I had never seen one myself.

Once you get the cluster repaired, it should show the mileage. The problem is with the display, not the buffer. I believe the cluster is a police cluster, although it may have been ordered with the cluster.

Funkwagon, A lot of the Caprice wagons that had woodgrain have had it removed. A friend of mine has one, and it still has marks where the trim was attached under the windows, and the body guy did a poor job of closing them.

Ad says low mileage and everything works. Yet in reality the cluster is dead. So the mileage is unknow and everything doesn’t work. I’d pass because of the wood but I know I’m in the minority on that one Smile

Several wagons on CL here in Florida last I looked.

CLusters are about $30 at the JY too. I have a few extras flying around....

That is cheap, but then he does not get to find the true mileage on the car.

You can get the cluster rebuilt with more robust electronics for $119.99, shipping included, and know the actual mileage - a likely help with registering or reselling the car in many states.

Swap out a junkyard cluster, and you may be back at square one in a few months. Most of these digital clusters eventually dim and become illegible.

See URL below for the service:

Thanks for all of the replies. I went ahead and bought her. "Judy" has a few issues, but don't most 24 year old females? Haha! I tried a YouTube fix on the speedo, but no luck. I will be scouring the forum to help me get her fixed up. Thanks again for all of the knowledge on here.
