I welded 3 inch long pieces of tail pipe to the upper spring seats, and tiewrapped the spring to the lower ones. You need the full travel of the axle drop to remove the wheels/tires in case of a flat.

Not sure what you're getting at. All of those things are independently powered or I am going to hard-wire it. The CB radio is just for fun for the 2 weeks worth of driving, won't take that long to install, and if I ever get tired of it I'll just take take it out. The radar detector is just extra insurance and the GPS is for when we're in dead zones that won't get cell service. You call it outdated, I call it covering my butt.

A cell phone isn't going to cut it for 10+ hours of driving a day.

Nice score. Any wagons remotely that cheap where I am are falling apart. Enjoy!

I also think radar detectors aren't worth much, but if it saves you once, it's basically paid for.

Hi everyone,

It's been awhile. The summer has been busy. My wife and I took an epic road trip and it was preeeetty great. The wagon ran like a champ. Averaged about 23mpg on the highway cruising with AC on full blast. We drove from Baltimore to Nashville, Louisiana, through El Paso, saw the Grand Canyon, visited tons of friends along the way in AZ, my brothers in San Diego, drove out on the Bonneville Salt flats, stopped at the Indianapolis Speedway.... Just so much. I'm really glad we did it.

Pictures!

Yikes! Coast to coast to coast. Did the dog share the driving?

Looks like an AWESOME trip! Wish I'd know you were in Texas...if you'd gotten near Austin I would have loved to have met up! I'm guessing you took 10 through San Antonio, so you would have been close!

Glad the car did well for these. These are such good trip cars! LOVE the salt-flats pic...a bucket-list destination for me. Great pics, thanks for sharing!

Hi everyone,

- We have a 8 month old golden retriever puppy who will be riding in the back pretty often. Does anyone have any dog-proofing tips? I was thinking about getting some sort of rubber mat for the back? Even though it'll look ugly, I'd rather protect the car.

This mat fits perfectly:

We made Gus Gus drive through Texas. Lol

The wagon was great. A few times we were stuck in stand-still traffic so we tuned up the CB radio and chatted with the truckers. Whoever wasn't driving hopped in the back and played with the pup until we got moving again.

Everywhere we stopped people wanted to talk about the wagon. Honestly, it got annoying sometimes.

Mike - We were really trucking' through Texas. We camped at Midland but didn't spend much time there other than Smell Paso (I actually really loved it there).

Our AC compressor gave up the ghost in Utah, so we ended up spending a couple extra days there while the dealership replaced it and fixed a fitting that was leaking. Spent a small fortune on it, but came with a warranty and it was too freakin hot to not have A/C. I don't think I could have put my wife and dog through another 4 days of driving without it.

I've noticed a howl coming from the rear end, so I'm guessing the pinion or a wheel bearing needs to be replaced now. The car officially has 116k miles on it. Cool the oil still looks great. I'd say she's broken in now.

My dad and brother drove out to San Diego a day after we did. We crossed paths at the Grand Canyon a few hours apart. Now I have two brothers living there, so we certainly have an excuse to go out again (maybe not driving).

Another Bonneville photo. It was super cool. We drove out on the lake and did some doughnuts in the salt (It's OK I washed it down after).
