I pulled the heads off the original motor in my wagon - 170k miles on it.

For those of you who know how to read the condition of these and make a guess at how this motor has been running, I'm curious as to what your thoughts are.

These heads are not being rebuilt or reused, just to be clear.

Looks like you were running a little lean on the rear cylinders, or rich on the fronts.

Fred - I thought the black intakes looked more like I would expect. Might there have been a vacuum leak in the back of the intake manifold? That's the only thing I can think of at the moment that would explain the back cylinders running lean.

With MPFI it could be the injectors as well, but it is unusual for both sides to have the same symptoms. There could have been a vacuum leak as well. You will never know.

Maybe the heads are warped. Clean them and put them on a flat plate to check for warping.

The plugs all look good, so you may have temp issues.
