They didn't tell you why? Thats pretty bizarre. They generally tell you what didn't pass, so that you can fix it.

So Mike, did you check the DMV laws before you had the front doors done? Oregon has the rules on % of tinting in the drivers handbook. I know because I am a new resident who just took the licence test, and am intrested in tinting my OCC back windows. They are very strict here too.

Where you cited?

Does Oregon have recurring inspections? If not, I'd recommend waiting til after inspection to tint. If yes, then make sure you follow the laws (or take your chances with illegal tint). In maryland, you are allowed to have 35% tint on all windows except during inspection, when no tint is allowed. If you have tint during inspection, it must be removed, but you will not be cited.

Oregon has emission testing by county. On the coast where I am it is not required. In Portland it is required. I would avoid the front windows to avoid a hassle. How did you get the tint off?

For the same reason they get to speed down the street even when theres no emergency. Theres nobody to enforce it, and they claim that theyve been specially trained to drive with dark tint and at high speeds.

That sucks, especially since you just paid to have it done, but that's an interesting thing about the rear limo tint being OK because it's a wagon... do you have your rear tailgate glass tinted?

^ in MD because it is a "true station wagon" (i.e., based on a sedan) I am NOT legally allowed to have any tint below 35% anywhere, however a Dodge Magnum is allowed to have all windows rear of the front doors painted black if they want, because there is no magnum sedan. Pretty stupid IMO.

That's dumb; the "Magnum Sedan" is the Charger. Does that mean if you had a '91 Roadmaster you would be allowed full tint?

The magnum sedan is actually a Chrysler 300. But no, because they base it on class. RM, Cap, OCC are all classified as passenger cars, but magnums, suvs, minivans, and pickups are categorized as "mulri-purpose vehicles (in MD they get whats known as an Mtag, which is a plate where the 4th character is an M). Mtag vehicles are allowed any % rear of the front doors.

I think the ambiguity on 'aft-of-the-drivers-window' tints are because of the existence of panel vans, which have no windows there.

I got hit with "dark tint" and when I went to court, the judge asked if I removed it. I told him "no", but I DID block the windows with a refrigerator box. He sent the arresting officer out to check, and sure enough, the box covered all the windows (with the seat down) and after arguing the issue, it was thrown out.

I told them that if they gave me the ticket, I would gladly remove the tint, but would replace with a box that still protected my contents from prying eyes, and would reduce my outward view from 20% to ZERO %.

I tried to argue that, but they would have none of it. Panel vans are part of the reason why rear windows are ambiguos, the other is that SUVs and minivans have 20% tint from the factory, which would violate MDs 35% all around law, so they have to make an exception

I find it fascinating how ignorant some RULES/LAWS are and how the state and countys do their
best to enforce them instead of concentrating on the important matters!

I completely agree Jim. Especially a law like this where I have tint to protect the stuff in my car from prying eyes because I don't have a trunk. Every officer I've talked to (aside from the one who gave me the ticket Evil or Very Mad ) agrees that it's a stupid law, and say they would not have given me the ticket, but that there was nothing they could do (i.e., sign off on the ticket) because that was the law.

Unfortunately, the police use laws such as these in order to pull over young people like me, so that they can search my car for drugs. It's happened a lot. Just another instance of police "profiling" (old car with tinted windows = druggie).

Man here in kentucky it's spelled out pretty clear for every vehicle except station wagons.

All vehicles can have a solar reflectance of 25% non film side and a light transmittance of 35% (35% tint) on the FRONT windows adjacent to the operators station (aka front doors).

Now with the rear windows, all windows behind the operators seat, it differs based on the vehicle classification.

Cars can have a solar reflectance of 35% non film side and a light transmittance of 18% (18% tint).
Multipurpose passenger vehicles (aka SUVs, Vans, Mini-Vans, Buses) you can have a solar reflectance of 35% non film side and a light transmittance of 8% (8% tint).

Now here's where it gets confusing for me:

No where can I find in the Kentucky Revised Statutes if a Station Wagon is considered a CAR or a MULTIPURPOSE PASSANGER VEHICLE. The way I understand it is these Multipurpose passenger vehicles don't have a trunk that is enclosed (in other words you can't see into the trunk area when it's shut) so they are allowed the darker tint. Well you can see into my wagons trunk area so I want to go as dark as possible to prevent people from seeing what might be back there.

I tried asking the county clerk personel about it and she said because it has a sedan equivalent it's not considered a multipupose passanger vehicle.

I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I called my sheriff's department to see what they say. They told me 18% on the rear window is as dark as you can go; however they never test the back windows (windows that don't roll down) because the tool has to be placed on both sides of the window glass to measure the tint. They also ventured to guess that most people end up going darker than 18% or 8% on the rear glass becuase they can't get the tool into position to measure the window. They then told me the best bet would be to talk with the county prosecutor to see what they are willing to go after to make my decision on how dark to make my trunk area. Knowing my luck I'd get boned if I went darker than 18% because the glass hatch opens and they would be able to measure the tint.

Plus all of the above quoted tints are allowed a tolerance of plus or minus 3%. So I guess you could go as low as 32% front, and 15% or 5% rear. But the tint installer has to affix a label to the drivers inner door stating what percent tint is on your window, so you can gurantee they will err on the plus side (38% tint). If you don't have this label then you can get an automatic ticket in Lexington, which is where I work, without them measuring the tint. If I had tint I'd call BS on that cause you had better pull that tool out and test my glass before you write me a ticket.

Anyways sorry about the novel. I'm saving up the cash to get Ms. Roadie some tint and just wanted to post my research on the topic. Sorry you had to strip your front windows clean but. . . you do live in PA and after watching parking wars and seeing how strict Philadelphia is on rules and regulations I can imagine the whole state going the same way.

If the authorities are citing the Roady and Caprice with having sedan equivalents, does the OCC get a pass on that?

This is the International Window Film Association's website. It has a chart for the US and Canada for window tint laws in each state/province. I've found it to be accurate (to the extent that I know of different states tinting laws).

in pa i was always told you cant have any tint on front doors and only 20% on others unless registered as a truck and was told i can register a wagon as a truck. my wagon has limo on all back windows and lighter tint on front doors. i am friends with my inspection station so i pass anyway. you should have done the $20.00 makes it go away route. do you do less than 5,000 miles if so you are emissions exempt. no need for cats

the tint thing is a bit of a grey area in pa for the most part. scoob8000 never gets pulled over for his caprice, he has some pretty dark tint all over. however mickwagon (mickey) got pulled over just passing through Pa. they gave him a ticket... and his tint is legal in NY where he lives. that is a pretty dick move on the troopers part.

I thought that troopers arent allowed to give equipment violations (i.e., tint, license plates on the front, etc) to cars registered outside of their jurisdiction. I suppose i could be wrong, and its a matter of common courtesy rather than a law.

I would have fought it

This is MN's laws about vans and such....not directly relevant to the OP but still related to the van discussion.

This is what it says:

(3) when any side window or rear window is composed of or treated with any material so as to obstruct or substantially reduce the driver's clear view through the window or has a light transmittance of less than 50 percent plus or minus three percent in the visible light range or a luminous reflectance of more than 20 percent plus or minus three percent; or

(b) This subdivision does not apply to glazing materials
which:

(3) are applied to:

(i) the rear windows of a pickup truck as defined in
section 168.011, subdivision 29;

(ii) the rear windows or the side windows on either side
behind the driver's seat of a van as defined in section 168.011, subdivision 28;

Heres section 168.011

Subd. 28. Van. "Van" means any vehicle of box-like design with no barrier or separation
between the operator's area and the remainder of the cargo-carrying area, and with a
manufacturer's nominal rated carrying capacity of three-fourths ton or less.
