PostSubject: '77 Buick A/C compressor questions   Thu Dec 20, 2012 9:15 am

When I bought the '77 Buick in July, the A/C was ice cold, with a new rebuilt compressor, and a new drier. After a month, the compressor seized. I have heard that rebuilt compressors are a crapshoot, but it was on the car when I bought it.
I have a compressor from an '86 Pontiac (80,0000 miles) that worked fine when the engine was swapped for a bigger one.
Should I try to use that on the old Buick? It looks similar, but different, and I think it will fit....
The system was converted to R134 long ago.
I'm thinking I have nothing but the price of an evac/ fill to lose by giving it a try.
Should I buy another drier?
Any advice?

If it's got the big A6 compressor like my '79 Electra, then you need to go new. The seals on the A6 compressors, especially rebuilt, just do not hold up to 134A well.

I replaced the compressor, accumulator, and orifice tube on the '79 Electra in 2011, the year of the big drought here. I went with the new S6 replacement unit, which is much lighter, takes less power to run, and is supposed to hold up a lot better to 134A. See here: http://www.s6compressor.com/products.html

Going on it's 2nd year and still quiet and COLD and you no longer feel the compressor hit the engine when you turn it on.

Whatever you do, since the other compressor locked up, make sure you replace the accumulator(drier) and the orifice tube, give the system a good flushing, and check the condition of the engine's fan clutch too.

Go research AC black death and you will flush the system every time Smile
