Got hit by a dump truck

I was headed to the junk yard Wednesday, and got sideswiped by a dump truck. Really sick about it.




I took it to my buddy's body shop, and he is going to submit an estimate to the insurance company. We will see if there is a battle for funds.

Believe it or not, I can still open the doors, and the metal is pried far enough away from the tires that it can be driven.

First of all, glad you are OK!!  I'm sick about your car also.  Hope it can be put back together.  Fred, I have a pretty good collection of stuff, in fact more than I need or want.  I will gladly donate anything you need to put her back together.  I know there are other guys who would feel the same.  You have helped many members out, now it's our turn.

Oh man, so sad to see as I know how much work you have in the car. From the pics, the worst of it looks like the rear quarter. I know Ray had his replaced, cut out below the window and a new one welded in. Too bad that $200 parts car just sold in Sebring. Only body parts I have is a passenger side front fender which you don't need...

I do have cladding. I think I have all the pieces for the driver side.
Also I know front fenders are new less than $50 online...

I can get the parts locally, from a Caprice and RMW. I have most or all of the trim, and an extra roll pan. I am debating whether to use 91 or 92 cladding. They mount differently, and I am not sure which I prefer. I may need the mount piece at the bottom of the rear door to hold the cladding on. I am considering switching to 95/6 front doors with 91-4 reveals, and getting some peek-a-boo rear view mirrors.

The quarter glass must be replaced as well, and fortunately I have one on hand.

The crash was not a violent stop. The truck just started grinding on the side of the car. My concern was that it would wear through. Amazingly it did not hurt the Imp wheels at all.

Those cars are big, but taking on a dumptruck is definitely punching above your weight. Best of luck with the insurers.

Glad you made it out okay, hopefully you can get it fixed up soon!

Let them write it off, fight for the most value, fix it yourself, and get it painted nicely to cheer up.

I'm sorry your car got hit... The damage is significant and will require some substantial sheet metal replacement and repairs... However, you are ok, and will be able to bring it back to a state better than before the hit. You walked away with only your emotions damaged. Clearly you have the drive and resources to overcome this hurdle. Get compensated, get the car fixed better than it was before and try to forget as quickly as possible. I drive my wagon two hours a day through DFW traffic to work. The conditions can be brutal, and people are unforgiving. The possibility of an accident looms at every moment. I still get to enjoy my commute every day in more comfort,reliability, style and practicality than the majority of my neighboring motorists. For car folks, life is too short to drive a boring car. The saying is, "If you don't turn around to look at your car walking away in the parking lot, your driving the wrong car".... I do, every day!

$2500 repairs? You got the buddy price for sure.

I'm glad to see the car survive. I leave the country ONE TIME and all hell breaks loose round here.

I got $500 for 10 minutes of whining. The original offer was $5000.

When the agent called to make me an offer, she said I would not be happy, and the first thing I said was, "I guess I will have to lawyer up." That means that they would be paying a lawyer fee on top of a personal injury settlement. This is a commercial policy, and they have a big personal injury cap.

I also preempted the offer with a call to the agent, and forcefully explaining the replacement value of the speed equipment installed on the car.

I'm really glad you got the funds settled so quick. Maybe it's a blessing, and you can paint the entire car when you do the repairs.

The actual cost with a complete paint job should be under $2500. I can get the parts for about $300. I am also going to do some of the prep and assembly.

What ever you did Fred it worked. Happy spending to rebuild it. Cue, Bionic Man theme music...

personal injury, along the lines of "the accident has caused a pain in the ass,.."

Fred, I dont post too often but I have read many of your posts. Sorry about the car. What a pain. At least the insurance company didnt total it. It would forever have a salvage or rebuilt title.

Strangely when my '92 CC got hit, State Farm totaled it and I had bought the carcass back from them which was supposed to be issued a salvage title. The salvage title never showed up, and when I finally took the shell to salvage I used my original title. Who knows why, I suppose it really does not matter. It was crushed before I even left the yard..

I hope you stripped all of the good parts before you took it to the salvage yard.

Almost being crushed by a dump truck would qualify for PTSD in my opinion.

That is what the $3000 is for.

I have all of the parts, and the car is going to the body shop on Monday (14th). I will be doing some work on it, because it requires some special tools, and I want to see if I can get some discounts.

For those of other states, in FL if they total the car, it's issued a COD (Cert of destruction) and can never be registered for street use again (at least in FL). People buy these cars cheap at auction, fix them and ship them out of Miami in a container to whatever Banana Republic you choose. You can also make race car!

I'll second that- glad that nobody was hurt and the big block wagon will ride again.

Any updates on the body work?

The quarter panel is being replaced this week. I just pulled the quarter window. All of the exterior skin on the drivers side has been removed, and the wheelhouse replaced. I must supply a few more trim parts, so into my stash again. I found out that the 93 wheelhouse is different from the 91 and 92. Bolts to attach to the firewall are positioned like the 94-96, but the other attachment points are the same as the 91-92. What other petty items can they mess with (rhetorical statement).

The parts came from at least four or five different cars.

I finally finished the new hood. I will post on it later. I am going to use either Dzus fasteners or pins to mount it...eight fasteners, no hinges or latch.

The car is still in the shop. It is getting closer to completion. I installed a hydroboost brake system (write-up with comments on ISSF) , but have not tested it. I suggested that, since my birthday is coming up in the beginning of November, it would be nice to have it back as a birthday present.
