So looking at a 1992 Caprice Wagon. Can you tell if this is a 350 or a 305 by looking? What tells you? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

One of the stickers on the core support or the fan shroud may have something , or you can check the 8th digit of the VIN E (LO3) 7 (LO5), or the white tag inside the left D pillar for U19 (LO3) U38 (LO5). The engine size is also cast into the block behind the driver's side valve cover.

Thanks! I knew about the block but it's not something you have much of chance of seeing in photos. This is very helpful!

One other question on the earlier ones. Is the mechanical cooling fan an indicator of a tow package like it would be on say a later model Roadmaster or did they all have them up to a certain year?

All 91-93 B body cars have a mechanical fan.

Odds are it has the original 305 in it but you never know. Won't know exactly what is in it until you check out the numbers on the block.

don't go by the fan shroud. I had a 305 car and replaced the broken shroud with one from a Buick so it said it had a 350 even though the SPID clearly said L03 (305) vs. L05 (350).
As for relying on the SPID, engines can be swapped. I would only rely on the block numbers at this age to be 100% sure unless you know the car's full history personally (like was Uncle Jims )

The block casting Is the definitive way to find out what the actual engine is...I swapped an LO5 onto my 92 OCC that came with an LO3.
