When I finally get the pan off, I want to replace that nylon bushing as recommended by many folks. I checked on Rock Auto and don't see any metallic replacements for the nylon part.

Given the oil pump as a unit is relatively inexpensive, would it make sense to just change the whole thing anyway? Which unit at Rock Auto would you guys recommend?

You should be able to get the metal collar at a speed shop. I think I paid $12 for mine. I do not know what the symptom was for you to pull the pan and pump, but if the pump was providing sufficient pressure I would reinstall it. The pickup is a RPITA to put on the pump correctly. I believe the collar has caused more pumps to be replaced than need be. If the collar breaks, the symptom is the same as a bad pump, and a garage will replace the pump to be on the safe side. There are kits to rebuild the pump, and you can rebuild the pump you have as well. The only pump I ever replaced was one where the relief valve was stuck, overpressured the engine, and squirted the oil filter gasket out, then the oil behind it (made a V spray pattern all the way across the street).

stock oil pumps and sleeves go forever,.

why is there so much drama to change the plastic collar these days,.?

there are millions of small block chevys' out there,. i don't hear of the collars failing on a regular basis,.

If you haven't heard an internet rumour today,. it's probably time to start one.

I think my inexperience with the SBC is showing. I looked more carefully at the diagram and the bushing doesn't appear to be where I thought it was.

Good point though, assuming the bushing is still there, I suppose there's nothing wrong with them if they last 20 years.

And I probably should have done an oil pressure check before I tore things apart.

In pondering this, I like Fred's idea of rebuilding the pump, even if it's not likely necessary. Haven't yet found a kit, but I'll keep looking and see if it's cost effective.
