Please remind me how the tailgate works

Currently, on my 95 wagon, the only way to release the back glass is to insert the key and turn counterclockwise. This is required if the rear door is unlocked or not. My 11 year break between wagons has my brain a little fuzzy. Should I be able to release the glass by pushing the button in back?

I think I have 2 issues. Not being able to release the glass latch without the key, and the electric hatch release on the dash does not work.

Any pointers on where to look for common issues with the glass release?

My guess, from experience, the rivet holding the actuator has sheared off. You need to pull the plastic interior panel and secure the actuator. Also make sure the rods are sitting in there clips.

Is there a clunk when you push the button? If so, then it is either a broken or loose popper. If there is no clunk, then it is probably electrical. It could also be a stuck popper. No matter what, you have to remove the interior panel.
