1992 Ruby. I put a compressor on it about 10-15K ago and on my way to WF FL, 10 miles from the destination it stopped turning and belt began to scream as it was slipping on it. Turning off the AC and the pulley free wheels just fine.

Question: Is it just just an external clutch part that could be pulled off it on the car as I have a JY Compressor in the garage.

Reason I ask is I filled it with R12 when I replaced the compressor about 1.5 years ago and don't want to have to crack open the system if I can help it as I already replaced the replacement compressor after a year (bought a reman off the forum and it didn't last).

I'm thinking I'm not replacing again as it's now a beach car for me and want to spend my $$ on fixing the 94 and get the 6 speed in that. That said if a couple of hours grunting can get a clutch on there and my AC back in action then ok.

Prior to the lockup, it had a bearing noise (that I thought was the PS pump)

Sadly, it's unlikely that your problem is an external clutch problem. It sounds like the compressor has seized.

The R-12 can be saved and re-used, if you have access to a recovery machine and filtration.
