It's of limited use for our cars. But I bought a reverse-engineered chinese knock-off Tech2 scan tool, $380 to my door. I mostly bought it for the wife's trailblazer, but but for fun I plugged it into my 1995 roadie wagon. Worked awesome! Can do 'output controls', Put the ABS module into 'bleed mode'. Here's the long version of my purchase ...

I Didn't know these existed until an couple of months ago. Just passing it along...

I bought one a year or so ago and documented the pros and cons here:

gmlongroof.4umer.com/t10975-new-never-used-gm-tech-2-style-scan-tool-for-under-300-part-1-of-2

A real useful upgrade for you to consider is swapping out the power supply daughter board for a Mornsun VRB1205LD-15W, described down near the bottom of that thread.

Wow, that's A detailed post! Thanks for all the info. Have you personally upgraded the PS on your tech2? Mine is working awesome now, so I don't wanna go looking for trouble. But if/when mine ever gets wonky, that will be the first thing I do. It's a cheap part to throw!

All the photos are of my unit, including the replacement PS. That said, I relied heavily on other internet resources when researching these. I think I made it clear where I was talking from personal experience and where I was relying on research.

If you find your unit runs warm near the bottom, then I would consider replacing the PS daughter board before it actually fails and takes out something on the motherboard rather than waiting for it to start acting up. The other advantage of the OEM device by Mornsun is that it is more tolerant of low-voltage input (such as when cranking). If the voltage input drops too low, the unit will reboot itself.
