New water pump, leaking upper bolts Empty
PostSubject: New water pump, leaking upper bolts   New water pump, leaking upper bolts Icon_minitimeThu Apr 06, 2017 12:12 am

So this past weekend I replaced the water pump along with multiple other things on my '96 RMW. I put pipe dope on the bolt threads as sealer. Three days later I've noticed the antifreeze laying on the top of the bolt cutouts where the bolts hold the water pump on. What do I need to seal those threads? Do the bolts directly under the top ones need to be sealed? I also did the mechanical fan delete when replacing the water pump and had the supplier of the top radiator cover supply me with the appropriate length bolts from the donor car.

Pic is of the new pump. Didn't think to take one tonight when I noticed the leaks. Was replacing the tensioner pulley and noticed the leaks.

The pipe dope works best on tapered threads. Also not a good application on anti-freeze solutions. You might want to try cleaning the bolts off and putting something designed to seal straight thread bolts such as the many products Permatex sells.

Yes, use the white sealer.

I use gm assembly adhesive (the stuff for things like head gaskets)..then let it cure up for a day or two

Thread locker type stuff is too thin

I used Permatex #2. It's the brown stuff that never really dries. It's speced for this application, and it doesn't leak for me!
