Hi all,
Anyone else have a 96 with the Collector's Edition front fender badges?
From what I've read, they were only put on the late 96 models toward the end of production. Some were added near the rear 1/4 panel Roadmaster emblems, but most were on the front fenders. Mine came off a salvage yard car in Dallas.
I also saw them on pretty rough 96 Roadmaster at the Pate swap meet in Ft Worth a few months back. It had them on the front fenders as well.
I've got an old Car and Driver magazine with the "new cars" for '96 listed, and it mentions that the Collector's Edition hood ornament is a re-issue from the 84-85 LeSabre, and also mentions the Collector's Edition fender badges.
I agree that they look a little "cheesy", but I believe they are real, and pretty rare, so I was happy to add them to mine. I'm not sure if they were dealer added or added at the factory though. Anyone know?
Here's some more info I've found looking online:

I have a 1996 Roadmaster Estate Wagon that has an emblem by the front wheels saying Collector's Edition, but it does not have a Limited emblem on the rear sides. Does anyone know the difference of the two emblems? I am thinking Limited has heated seats, which mine does not, whereas Collector's may have to do with it being one of the last cars produced during the 1996 last year of production,
maybe in the last month or so.

If your car was a Limited, it would have a Limited badge under the Roadmaster badge (I believe it is on the tailgate, but am not sure as I have never owned one).
The only real difference between a Limited and a standard Roadmaster is the seat design. Heated seats were optional on the Limited and not on the standard car. I have seen the collector's edition badge on other sedans and wagons, but am not sure if it was put on at the factory or a popular add on by owners as most '96 cars don't have them.
1996 was an extended model year for the Roadmaster, I believe it may have gone through December but am not certain. You can tell which year and month your car was manufactured by the sticker on the driver's door edge. If your wagon was manufactured late in the model year, then you are probably right about the collector's badges being applied to the last cars.
