PostSubject: Goofy aftermarket alarm   Goofy aftermarket alarm Icon_minitimeFri Dec 23, 2011 11:08 am

My car has an alarm horn under the hood, has since I bought it, but no controls and no docs came about the alarm.

When I pulled the dash cluster out to put the Z-cluster in, I found two control boxes, a bunch of wiring with inline fuses on it, and both a flashing light and toggle switch mounted way under the dash on the hush panel there. I hope it's not a bomb....ha!

I didn't touch any of it, for fear the car would never start again. Am debating if I want to chase down the wires and try to remove the mess or just leave it alone and cross my fingers it never shorts out.

I HATE aftermarket alarms....

The switch is probably a kill switch for your ignition or to bypass your alarm.

My Impala has a dealer installed alarm with a small LED and swtich under the light switch. It has a horn mounted to the drivers side inner fender. I have never messed with it.

Ours was the same way when we got it. I started by removing the horn under the hood, then followed all the wiring underneath the dash. Mine sounds just like yours had a main box with two smaller boxes, and three relays buried way up in there. Removed it all, and had no problems

Removed one from my wagon as well when I first bought it. Really wasn't too hard of a job since most places install them very cheaply. No connectors were even used, the alarm wires were taped to bare spots on the OEM wiring, lol. I just had to re-splice the starter wire so the engine would turn over with the 10lb mess removed.

It took me a long time to find a new dash panel WITHOUT a friggin hole cut into it for an alarm light.

I did not mess with this over the holiday. Figured it was better to leave it alone than start cutting into it. It's all zip-tied now though....from my rattle-stopping project.

Most of these installations use those "piggyback" connectors that cut into the insulation and usually cut a couple of strands of the inner wire, as well (I hate them!) In some cases, the piggyback connectors have male spade connectors that the alarm wires are plugged onto and you can simply unplug and wrap with electrical tape.
Most of these alarms have a wire tied into the ignition that will ground it and almost all of them I've seen SEVER THE PURPLE STARTER WIRE somewhere and tie into the cut ends, which only allows the starter to work if the alarm says so! This purple wire is typically 8 to 12 gauge, but the alarm wires tying them together are typically MUCH SMALLER!
I too HATE getting a used car with an aftermarket alarm because more than a couple have had electrical problems as a result!
The only solution is to TRACK DOWN AND DISCONNECT every piggybacked connection and BE SURE THE STARTER WIRE IS RESTORED
