Roadmaster with only 2 speakers? Empty
PostSubject: Roadmaster with only 2 speakers?   Roadmaster with only 2 speakers? Icon_minitimeSat Oct 27, 2012 11:55 am

Hello all, I recently bought a nice '92 Roadmaster Estate which is pretty heavily optioned except in the stereo dept. (elderly owned). It came with the am/fm cassette deck, but near as I can tell it only has left side front & rear speakers. Anyone run into this before? If you turn the balance to the right, no sound. Only works centered, or to the left.

I had the spare tire well cover off & noticed there was no speaker in the rear. I have not had a chance to check the pass. door yet, but I'm guessing there is nothing there either. Why in the world would they put speakers on one side? Do you think the speaker wiring may be there?

I obviously want a full set of speakers but want to upgrade from stock, they need not be killer just nicer than stock. What are the factory sizes for a Buick? I believe 6x9 rear, but I have seen guys saying 2 different front sizes.

Thanks for the help! Paul

Rear is 6x9. Fronts are 4x6s.

You can make adapters for 6.5s if you want sound that doesn't suck, though.

I'm betting wither A: the speakers died and were removed or B: the right channel in the amp inside the factory radio died and the speakers were removed

I've personally seen one case and heard of another where the speaker cones were completely frozen and unable to move. I'm not sure what causes it...unless it's heat causing the laminated voice coil wire to lose its insulating coating and get stuck? I've never seen any Delco radio suffer failure of the power amplifier ICs and start putting DC out to the speakers.

The radio itself may have problems as well. All of these radios are starting to show their age as electrolytic capacitors wear out and other components may drift. If the problem is in the radio, the entire amplifier board should be recapped. This is easy if you know how to solder and cheap, but the boards are coated with a protective material that does not come off easily. The usual sign is a dead channel or crackling in one or more speakers. The radio I've got in my wagon now has a clock display that shuts off like it should when the key is out, but it has lost the right rear channel, the right front is weak and has crackling when cold. I need to hurry up and get the original fixed.
