307 V8 Power Steering Belt Empty

Is there some secret to getting the power steering pump to slide far enough left to replace the belt on a 307? Everytime I get close the pump reservoir hits up against the curve in the bracket where it attaches to the engine. It won't move far enough to remove the belt.

If you are replacing the belt with a new one, just cut it.

I thought of that but I would still have the same amount of trouble getting the new one on. It seems like the pump just doesn't move enough. I would hate to cut it off and then not be able to get the new one on.

Presumably this is an Olds 307 and not a Chevy 307 given the list in your signature?

If so, then you may need to remove one of the bolts that allow it to rotate in the slotted bracket (or one of the brackets).

Whoever designed the power steering bracket for the Olds motors was an overachiever! When the world comes to an end, every Olds power steering pump will still be solidly in position!

Yes, an Olds 307 and I think you're right. I looked at the picture under pump removal in the shop manual instead of belt adjustment. There is another slide bolt hidden under the pulley at the bottom of the pump. I'm not able to get to the car right now but hopefully that gives me more adjustment. My 70 98's PS Pump is easier to work with.

I was able to replace all the belts and the tapping stopped. I ended up cutting the power steering belt off and the replacement was slightly longer and easier to install.
