rack BigBlackBeaSSt - aftermarket rack Empty
PostSubject: aftermarket rack   rack BigBlackBeaSSt - aftermarket rack Icon_minitimeSun Aug 03, 2014 6:50 pm

I have a 91 rmw and now own a 17ft canoe, please contain your laughter. Other than spending 350 plus or buying a trailer anybody have a rack suggestion? Bow/stern will need to be tied but looking for simple solution for cross bars. Any help appreciated

I haul up to 3 canoes at a time on mine.  THULE (two lee) had a kit that attaches to the existing rails.  It is made up of 4 attachment points, 4 "feet" and two bars.  You simply us the rails already on our cars and install the kit.  they pop on and off very easily.

I have used this and many other THULE set ups over the years with my different cars and had few to NO issues.  I typically do not tie the bow and stern, but will if I am traveling on an expressway for any distance I tie off the stern to the rear hitch.  The front of the canoe comes no where near the front bumper on the roadmaster so there is real no way to tie it off unless you added an attachment point.

2 canoes on the car, they are both about 16' long.  The two large canoes Green & White are 17' and 17' 6" and both have been on the wagon together.

My first wagon/THULE set up.  I often stack 3.  This gets a little tricky.

There is a plastic bumper at the front of the rack to lean things on. You can also get other racks from later RMWs that will fit your tracks. The 94-96 had stand away racks that will lift the canoe about 3 inches above the car. There are also tiedowns along the sides of the rack. You can also tie the canoe to the cross bars. I would suggest that you tie the bow and stern to the front and rear of the car as added insurance.

Watch craigslist closely and you will often see the older THULE or Yakima systems sell pretty cheap. I have two complete set ups for our cars and both came from Craigslist.

Thanks guys. Bbb I noticed on your celeb you had one over your frnt doors, I was thinkin the same and use a strap suc cup type and a single thule/yak on the factory rack. Or just buy two for the factory rack? Just doesnt look long enough from rear of factory rack to the frnt of factory rack to be secure. Maybe im over thinking it but dont want to waste money buying what I wont use. I will for sure tie off bow and stern and I think the two on the fact will be sufficient just not sure. This is the canoe http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/pelican-bayou-canoe-assembled-reviews like I said shes big

If it's a pelican it is heavy as well. Thule also has a rack that will mount over the front doors. This would be much more stable. I have the front rack for my wagon but I rarely use it. I don't like to put the rack on the paint.

So I loaded up for a North Clackalacky trip. Decided to do the longer rack set up so I took so close ups for you.
