| I noticed last time I came back to Kansas in the winter, the power steering made a little noise at start up then went away. I installed a reman power steering pump this fall while I had the motor out. Never made any noise till I get back here to Kansas and its 10 degrees outside. It made a little noise at start up, it died down but never went away. Even after a 30 mile drive, I could still hear it, mainly when acceleration. Wtf? | |

| the fluid is cold. I live in S FL where it never gets REAL cold and on 40s morning on my 91 Olds it was like I had no power steering when backing out of the driveway. 20-30 seconds later it was fine.
Only happened if it was less than 50 degrees out and then everytime. Pump would whine a little too.

| Had the same problem with my LAB wagon. Switched to Genuine GM Fluid 12345867 Cold Climate Power Steering Fluid - 32 oz. amazon linkNo more whine during cold starts. I would also check the fluid. If there is any water in it. (Had this as well) it will whine. Look at the fluid right after the engine starts. It will be bubbly and have some white foam. | |

| I live in Arizona, and on certain days during the winter my PS did the same thing.
Some of the problem was my fault though. I had a wheel/tire combo that was probably too large. Once I drove it a little and got all of the fluids warmed up, the noise went away.
When you are in extremely cold weather, do you park the vehicle outside? If so, do you have the capability to park it somewhere a little warmer? I know that this is not a permanent fix, but it could help until you can get the fluid changed.

| nope. when Im back in Kansas, no one believes in garages. But that's ok, its warmer in Georgia and now no issues. I just don't think it makes sense that in this car, it makes noise. every other car my self or my parents have had never did this. | |

| Lt1 power steering pumps are turning much faster than needed,. they move a lot of oil,..
use skinny fluid,. no whine,.
use fat fluid,. lots of whine till oil becomes warm and skinny,.
If someone has put in the wrong viscosity oil,. then it whines on start up,.
Your parents cars might not have been very sophisticated compared to later model cars,.
Some p/s steering pumps need a dedicated blend to have longevity,. check out honda power steering fluid as an example,.
stay in georgia,. no problems,.and either believe what you,ve been advised to,. or don't ,..your move. If things don't make sense after a detailed explanation,. well,. do what you want,. you're gonna anyway.
Why did you change the pump the first time?

| Because I had the engine out and it had 115k on it. Replaced most everything I could while it was out. I guess I just ran ps fluid, didn't really pay attention to viscosity. | |
