What to use to flush the diff? Empty
PostSubject: What to use to flush the diff?   What to use to flush the diff? Icon_minitimeThu Mar 26, 2015 7:57 pm

Before I install my replacement posi rear, one of the things I intend to do is drain the old oil, then flush it out , let it dry then add the new fluids. What should I use to flush out the last of the old fluid? I was thinking kerosene, but don't want to screw anything up by using the wrong stuff, Ideas?

I use a spray can of brake cleaner.
Start from the top and keep spraying till all old oil is flushed out.
Wipe cleaner from bottom and air dry.

Same here. Use some shop towels first to soak up the oil in the bottom to save on brake cleaner.

I was literally just searching the site for the exact same thing.

I have had the car for a year now, and finally have the funds to do necessary maintenance.

Phantom 309 said this on another thread about changing the gear oil.
"if using full synthetic,. make sure the additive is compatible.
IIRC,. full synthetic doesn't need the additive,. but Semi synthetic does.??
If am doing a rear gear oil change,. and the inside is very scummy,.
i use varsol/diesel/gas etc to wash it out good, can of parts cleaner works well too.
I prefer to use silicone instead of a gasket,. giving the bead a good 15 mins to get a skin on it
before re-installing the cover."

This is the entire thread if you would like to read it.

Use gloves! I hate gear oil! I feel like I can never get it off my hands. The smell....Oh how I hate that smell

The rear end is not in the car, that makes your options better
This is what I would do,. you may or may not agree with it,.

do what you want , you're gonna anyway,.

IF it was really scuzzy inside,.i,d pull the axles and guts,.
If not,.I,d pull cover and drain it,.
Take it to the car wash with a bottle of dawn dish soap,.and quart of diesel fuel,.
Wash it out,.then splash the diesel over everything.
take it home put it on a couple of axle stands with the yoke up,. let it drip the diesel out,.
turn it over with the air gun on the yoke nut for minute or so,.
Wipe it down with some paper towel put the cover back on with silicone,.

if it needs new seals,. best time to put the three of them in, is now.and put your wheels cylinders and brake shoes on too,.

As someone with a stake in a self serve car wash. This is HIGHLY discouraged. It makes a huge mess and all the nasty oil and diesel will sit on top of the trap in the drain.

Please do not do this. Your local carwash owner will thank you.
