My 96 RMW with 78K miles is a little slow to start. Instead of firing right up, it turns and turns - just a few seconds - but never fails to start. And when driving slow thru the neighborhood, it feels like it's missing a lick. I changed the plugs and wires, no cheap venture, and that is the limit of my capabilities. If I take this to a shop, what am I likely looking at? Any ideas? Guesses?

A fuel pressure test gage is relatively inexpensive. Check what the fuel pressure at the rail builds to when the key is first turned.

Maybe fuel pump? Common problem and probably expensive if a shop does it. Not sure, but maybe $400 to $500?

I just solved my hard start issue a few weeks ago by replacing the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. I borrowed the fuel pressure test kit from advance auto and my pressure was good but would drop off when leaving the key in the run position. I suspect my main hard start issue was the fuel pressure regulator. I got an estimate from my regular shop and they wanted $838.72 to replace the three items. I did the work myself for about $300 and that included the sending unit along with the fuel pump. The shop did not include the sending unit in the estimate. My wagon now starts immediately, it's wonderful.
