Subject: Transmission FAILURE... Any replacement tips? Tue Aug 14, 2018 6:20 pm
A few weeks ago the transmission in Puff the Magic Wagon died. Lost 3rd and 4th but was able to almost limp it home. With about a mile to go i lost all gears and had to tow it the rest of the way. Now the trans just makes a lot of rattling noises when its running, but it was able to drive into the shop and up on the stands!
We have another trans from a good running parts car, but looking at the job, there doesn't seem to be much room to access or remove the trans. Frankly it appears to be a major pain compared to a lot of what I've worked on.
Any transmission R&R advice? Tips or tricks?
Thanks.

The trans crossmember comes out. More than enough room then

You must have a 91-93 trans to replace the original one. Make sure you reset the cable once you install the replacement. Make sure the VSS gears are the proper ratio for your differential, and that you have the correct VSS for the output gear.

Exhaust off, driveshaft out, cross member out, disconnect wiring, disconnect cooler lines, disconnect linkage, unbolt converter, lower that trans out.

94-95-96 trans are slightly different. Replace with the same year.
You did not state what year your car is.

How'd this turn out red? Did you get it running again?
