| My 96 will not crank. Battery is 3 months old and is at 12.6 volts cold. When jumping it is at 14v. Turning the key all the lights in dash turn on but there is no cranking. Both keys same issue. All fuses are good. It started no problem this morning, but on this afternoon. | |

| I had pretty much the same thing happen with my car a few months back. Started fine in the morning but when I tried to go home after work it wouldn't crank but everything else came on.
Ended up being the starter had gone out.

| The passkey light is flashing. What is the easiest way to fix an issue with the passkey system. | |

| Cut a resistor into the wiring at base of steering colum. Google has step by step instructions. | |

| Do the lights dim when you turn the key to the "start" position? Check starter and solenoid? Does someone listening under the hood hear a "click" when the key is turned to "start"? Did you clean the battery connections? Bad connections or a bad starter (or both) would commonly produced the symptoms you describe, and if you are lucky it's one of these easily traced issues.
Tapping the side of a starter that's on the way out with a hammer is a tried and true shade-tree mechanic technique that often persuades the starter that you really mean it this time and that your patience is wearing thin.
Actually it can loosen crud and carbon internally and gets it to kick over one more time, although it is on borrowed time.

| My starter failed recently. The local shop dropped in a replacement, that is already showing signs of trouble. Read the comments about alternate starters in that thread: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] | |

| Replaced starter and still no cranking. I head a click under the hood. Going to replace the cable from starter to battery. | |

| Finally figured it out. There was a third party antitheft device with a printed circuit card like key. It had a relay that was spliced into the main yellow ignition wire and the socket for the key card was stuff way up under the dash. I cut it out and reconnected the wires it bypassed. It strated right away. | |
