This controls the water pump....or keeps it going. Just replaced the water pump but mechanic didn't say I needed a tensioner. NEW mechanic replaced serpentine belt and said smooth tensioner is fine but ribbed one is sticking and needs to be replaced. Can't find it online or in parts shops. Should I WD-40 the hell out of it? Or will that only make matters worse? (WD-40 is my go-to for everything.......except I did use black duct tape when the black trim fell off my other car - 1992 Buick Roadmaster.) Thanks!

You must have a tow pack car. The smaller belt turns the fan. The water pump is driven by a gear behind the timing cover.

That tensioner, like most everything else for these cars, is long out of production. Check the classified section/post a wanted ad and hope that someone has a good one for you.

Yep, the tow package tensioner is no longer available. Time to delete the mechanical fan and continue on.

If you're in maine, just leave the thing disconnected and you'll be fine.

Is the spring sticking, or the pulley? You should be able to replace the bearing in the pulley. The tensioner itself is made of unobtanium.
