Parking Brake Pedal Not Locking  Empty

Parking brake pedal is not clicking and locking in place when pressed down. The parking brakes hold the car when pressed and held manually.
Anyone had this issue or now how to fix? Thanks!

my Pontiac safari has that happening, there's a return spring on the pedal mechanism that broke so the release handle once pulled out remains out unless it is manually pushed back in
