| So I finally sourced my engine problem to my EGR valve. It threw the SES light up and I checked it out, and that's what the code was. It's a mess, and I imagine cruddy inside too. So I have a question: How does an EGR block-off work? I know the light will stay on (from what I've read), and I need a plate to delete it. What difference will it make for the car? I just don't see the idea of throwing $100 out for this stupid thing when others have deleted it entirely? Am I wrong? Confused? Please help. |

| I do not know all the effects of removing the EGR valve, but the only time the engine uses it is at constant speeds to reduce emissions. The engine will adjust the mixture to compensate. Other than the light coming on, the engine will not run in closed loop with the EGR code in the computer.
Replacement unit from Rock Auto can be as low as $62.99 + shipping, Autozone has one for the same $62.99. They are easy to replace having only 2 bolts and a vacuum line. The hardest part is if the gasket sticks and you have to scrape it off. It does not indicate that the passage is blocked, because the EGR malfunction affects the engine.
If you choose to go with Rock Auto, here is a discount code good until the 22nd of August. 34824832861867

| I wonder if Advance has it for the same price as Autozone -- I can get 20% off there because my dad is an employee.
I was just curious because sometimes the light is on, and sometimes it shuts off. I'm not really concerned with emissions, since Florida has no inspection or anything. And I've noticed my gas mileage has sort of gone down since this has happened, so I kind of want to get it fixed ASAP. Especially since I have a ~300 mile trip to do in 3 weeks to college. |

| I'm having fun with this issue now. Read my Failure post in the Electrical section of the forum.
Will post what's found out.

| Be sure to use a vac when scraping the old gasket off...otherwise you will make a mess in your intake...

| If I go ahead and try to clean up the EGR, how would you recommend I do it? |

I think Advanced was about $75. That should negate your discount. It could be the soleniod.

| $69 on Advance's website... minus 20% makes it $56.
How do I test the solenoid? |

| Had this problem on my old sedan. A new valve cleared it right up. | |
