| After finding bearing parts in the pan and most shops hesitant to rebuild 200-4R due to lack of cores and experience we've decided to find a remanufactured one. I see a few, not many, on line and was wondering who is best. I've seen a few from PATC, Monster, and Transdepot. This is for a bone stock 1990 Olds Custom Cruiser in excellent condition otherwise. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve. | |

| I'd check around locally and have it done by the most well-reviewed shop you can find. That way, if there is an issue, it's on them. | |

| most shops that work on modern cars wont, if you want to rebuild your existing try to find a local shop that does older cars or even custom cars.
I got lucky I know the owner of a shop in Stevens point Wisconsin which is about an hour and a half from my home who not only rebuilt the 200-4r in my 87 Pontiac but he had to repair a modification someone had made to the valve body, the shop is DnD auto, and they not only do normal automotive repair but custom under hood work, including complete custom engine builds and tuning on their own in house dyno.
but if you can't find anyplace local that you trust, or want to trust, I would say monster transmission as I have considered getting a transmission from them if I ever go power mad on my RMW or my 86 crew cab dually.

| I'd go lurk on the Monte Carlo or Gran National forums and see who they're using. Or, contact Oregon Performance Transmission and see if they recommend anyone. Personally I'd stay away from Monster. Does Jasper or ATK rebuild 200-4R's? I'm very pleased with my Jasper rebuilds. | |

| ATK and Jasper don't offer a 200-4R, only 700-R4 and derivatives. The transmission shops recommended the reman due to the low volume of parts/cores and either inexperience with or for the primary shop not actually working on a 200-4R in over 20 years. | |

| Has anyone used Extreme Automatics or Art Carr's California Performance Transmissions? Other forums talk about them for 200-4R's. | |

| Art Carr is well known, and has been building tough 200s since they were new. Many, many magazine articles on that business.
Have you tried a local trans builder? These are common transmissions, well known, easy to build, and have many many parts available that make them stronger.

| I called local shops and they were apprehensive, nobody's an expert on them. Even the guy I'm using to swap it whose been doing transmissions since the 70's hasn't touched one in 20 years. He said they're just not very common anymore. | |

| We decided to go with Art Carr's California Performance Transmission since he can build a street not high performance one for us. All the others were performance first and dial back for street. | |

| Have the car back now after sending it back to be readjusted. When it first came home it shifted super hard. I contacted Art and he and my installer talked through the adjustments and it shifts more firmly than the original but not jarring like the first time I brought it home a couple weeks ago. The long leg was fixing the damn passenger side valve cover leak on the 307, they kept replacing the gasket with a rubber gasket but it would still leak. They finally used an old fashioned cork gasket and now the leak has stopped, weird. It seems to slow idle higher than before though. I could feel it idling fast and when I opened the hood it was definitely faster and louder. I checked and the choke is all the way open. Can adjusting the TVC affect idle speed? It has the E4MC CCC Carb. Is the slow idle still a screw on the driver's side? | |
