| So, the friend I sold my '94 RMW wagon to (when I bought my 96) has a problem. The car was stolen with the key in it (don't ask...) and she had lost her spare (I mean, Jeez, Jennifer). Our local whiz mechanic managed to get a new key cut via the VIN but the security system is proving harder to defeat. He has managed to get a work-around for the starter, but the fuel enable will not switch on. He says that there used to be guys that could reflash the chip that sits in the bowels of the dash but he can no longer find anyone who does it. So, we have a car sitting and not starting. Options at this point are to find a junker with keys and bring matched keys and chip over to this car - and then deal with all the locks...urghhh. Or? Well I'm hoping that one of you chaps will supply the "or." One way or another we need to bypass the fuel enable or get that chip reset.
Any suggestions?
Thanks. | |

| If it's the chip in the key, a Chevy dealer can make the proper key using the VIN.
You can also program out the need for the VATS using tuning software.

| Or just put a resistor in across the two wires at the base of the steering column that is the same value as the pellet in the key. No more security, but that's been demonstrated to not be an issue here | |

If they don't have a factory key they don't know what resistance to use. ---------------------------------------------- If they got a key cut using the VIN why didn't they get the correct chip key? The fuel enable portion has to be programmed out of the PCM. Then you unplug the module and ground the connector with a paperclip.

| True - maybe a 10 turn potentiometer and turn it until it works or a set of 15 resistors? FSM says to wait 4 minutes between attempts so you'd have at most an hour in figuring it out. [ | |

| So much easier and quicker to just go to a local dealer and have the proper key made. | |

| Agreed - At least there is more than one option. | |

| You could also have the computer flashed to remove the VATS. | |

| Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I should have mentioned that the new key came with the correct chip, but the decoder is not reading it - thus the hope to get it re-flashed. Fred, do you know of anyone that currently does this? (In that you mentioned it). Thanks again. | |

| Simple. Just need a laptop an ALDL cable and a copy of TunerPro and EEHACK. | |
