| Hey guys, a little new here. A little background, I have a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser that's all stock and has just went over 210k miles (my grandfather had bought it brand new so it's been in the family forever). Anyways, the transmission started slipping slightly a couple months ago and now she's done for. I went to my mechanic and they want 2900 to rebuild the 4l60e that's in it but I plan on keeping this vehicle for the rest of my life so I want to replace it with something that'll last at least another 210k miles. I read this article about our transmissions https://5fa06d83b9d6f.site123.me/blog/buick. It doesn't seem like a great article to me but it talks about remanufactured transmissions being a much better option than rebuilt ones. I have looked at some online for around 3000 but that's not including labor for the install. Is it worth the extra 1k or so to order a remanufactured transmission or should I just have mine rebuilt? Thanks in advance | |

| if you get a remanufactured one you need to make sure your getting it from a place that knows what their doing, as the problem that usually causes failures is actually overheating components caused by lack of fluid flow, so a good company will modify the problem parts to increase fluid flow to help with cooling.
I've actually been looking at Monster transmissions for when it comes time to do the transmission in my Buick, but I don't think you'd need one of their performance transmissions.

| I don't see why your local mechanic couldn't do the same or better job as any other rebuilder and you'd be supporting a local business. | |

| They need to understand the weaknesses of the 4L60 transmissions, particularly the low pressure isssue because of internal leaks to the 3-4 clutch because they are last on a long path or fluid flow. Drums appear to a very hidden place for the leaks and often not caught from what I found out reading up before taking mine in last week. Also good valve body rebuild and 7 disc clutches, also talked about a lot. Mine is at a relatively old school place that does tons of them in lighter pickups and big SUVs where they are very common. Claim a less than 1% failure rate with 1/2 of them electronics even with the new solenoids they put in 90% of what was in line to get done were Chevy pickups and SUVs so believable.
I carried it in to them, and the charge will be $1550, so certainly not the cheapest around here, but not over the top either, and they seemed like good people.

| You say you have a 91 cutlass cruiser. A 91 cutlass cruiser would not have a 4L60e. First of all it is a front wheel drive car, and would have a 4T60e. A 4T60e high performance build should not be more than $1500-1600 (including a torque converter) and installation should not be more than $400-500. There is a place in Jacksonville Florida that will sell you a properly built trans for about $800 (+core). They will install it for a little more. No one knows where you are located for pricing in your area. The place in Jacksonville will ship the trans to you, and you must ship your core back. You could ship your core to them for rebuilding as well. | |

| Even if it goes to a Buick big car, the 4L60E did not show up until 94. He stated he has a 91. | |

| Yep, would be 4L60 (700R4) the hydraulic control version. AFAIK, other than controls same basic trans? | |

| So what do you really have OP? Custom cruiser, or Cutlass Cruiser? Makes a lot of difference. | |
