Have a sound coming near the outboard side of the footwell on the driver side, under the dash. Did a search here, didn't find anything. Not sure what it is yet, thought I'd ask here if anyone has any experience. I'm getting a "clunk" sound, happens when the car is in motion, above 30 mph. Sound occurs every 5-10 seconds.. It sounds like a servo is trying to move a door and then retracts back?
Sound familiar to anyone or thoughts? Thanks in advance! Mike

There is a relay behind the kick panel for the power door locks.

Problem found! I noticed that my trip odometer was sticking again. I usually reset it when I get fuel. Giving the button a second reset, usually resets so that the odometer works properly. The last time I got fuel, that second hit on the button did not work. So, another depression to the trip odometer button and the noise went away.
Hope this helps others who may run into this problem. Mike

The clicking is the stepper motor trying to turn the trip dials. Some speedo repair outfits apparently have the parts to repair this, but I haven't found anyone willing to sell just the motor. They all want to "rebuild" the cluster assembly.
Let us know if you find anyone willing to sell just the motor. The number drums are fairly bullet proof.

I have a complete odometer with motor I can sell. It should be the same motor as the trip odometer.

"" It should be the same motor as the trip odometer.""
Same motor for both. The gear train splits the drive.

If I have this right... the stepper motor is usually the part that fails, not the trip odometer? I assume the stepper motor is located somewhere in the lower kick panel, under dash area on the drivers side.

The stepper motor is attached to the odometer, and is part of the cluster.
I had the same issue that was freaking me out on my 93 BRW - i hadn't had it that long and kept hearing that same sound.
Didn't realize what it was right away either. I recorded the sound while i was hearing it Realized it only did it when the car was moving... duh...
the trip odo isn't in the same place as my 94 95 amd 96 roadies but I did notice that it was hard to get it to zero out properly after a fill up.
Hasn't done it since and the odo works without sticking anymore. I don't remember doing anything to try to fix it but I always have to finesse the button softly a few times to get it to reset properly. Maybe the car was trying to convey a secret message to me by morse code and i failed to decipher it :-D

Your description is exactly what I also experience. Thanks for the info.
my odo and trip meter work fine, but i get a sound that i can only describe as a speedometer cable that needs lube sound... you know, like the old cable driven ones..... sounds rotational or cyclic of some sort.. not very loud but its beginning to bother me... but sounds like its down by my foot... any ideas or perhaps the same thing?
