That first video of the LT1 Caprice wagon filled with soldium silicate sure fired up my Dad. Just showed it to him, and he was yelling at the monitor.
I'm constantly in the salvage yards for all my projects, and I wish I'd taken all the pics of the CARS program vehicles that were in the Dallas and San Antonio yards. About makes you want to cry looking at some of them.
But that LT1 wagon....geez!

I think the Impala upset me as much as the Caprice wagon...

There were some nice cars trashed in that program. Some junk sure but plenty of good cars that could have gone to someone who needed cheap reliable transportation too. I remember seeing those videos being posted when the program was going on.

DOn't even get me started on the 92 OCC blue on blue garage kept with 113K and MINT condition. I spent over 250 bucks stripping it at the yard....more than I spent on two parts cars I bought, but the pieces were sooooo damn good. Every bit of it hurt.... At least I rescued half the interior. It was a 350 too

That's the one silver lining. Lots of good parts showed up for a while. Too bad there was a time limit on how long a CARS vehicle could sit in the yards. My brother, who is nothing like me and drives foreign, has an '01 Pathfinder. The front was damaged from hitting a deer, and the rear hatch was dented where he'd been bumped. Before CFC there were zero Pathfinders that new in the yards, and after there were a ton of them. I was able to fix his rice-runner Nissan super cheap.
I try to look on the bright side.....until I see those videos....

I try not to be too political...we live in a free country and God Bless Us for it, and politics stirs people up and can cause arguments between friends...my best friend is a hardnose democrat, as is my younger brother. That said, and not to bring up any other issues, I'm still simmering over the Cash for Clunkers program.
The car nut in me still looks back on the $2.8 BILLION (!) Cash for Clunker program-nightmare that happened under this administration, where 700,000+ running, driving, registered and useful vehicles were destroyed. Remember, vehicles had to have been insured and driven for a year, so it's not as if these were all merely broken shells or junkers! 37 people decided to clunk models that were less than a year old!
I was not able to find a breakdown of how many of our beloved B-bodies and wagons were sent to the scrappers, but look at the numbers below for other cars that were clunkered...
A total of 1,611 Mustangs – One of those Mustangs was an '08!
More than 3,000 Thunderbirds, including an '05 two-seater: and 107 Ford Taurus SHOs are no longer with us.
As for the General... brace yourself: 131 Corvettes from '84 to '95, including 34 convertibles!!!
Also, more than 1,000 Camaros from '84 to 2000 are no longer with us, along with 569 Firebirds, including a rare 20th anniversary Trans Am
Elsewhere in the GM lineup, there was a Buick GNX, and 61 Fieros (including the rare and desirable '88 models) sent to the scrapper. A number of 94-96 Impala SS’s were also turned in.
Here are some of the other rare and/or ODD cars this “program” took out:
Individual Vehicles Clunkered for a MAX of $4500! • 1987 Buick ASC GNX • 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante • 1997 Bentley Continental R • 1989 20th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am • 1992 GMC Typhoon • 1985 Audi Quattro • 1992 BMW 850i Coupe • 2006 Audi A4 Convertible • 2006 Cadillac STS • 2008 Foose F-150 (2!) • 2007 GMC Acadias (3) • 2008 Hyundai Accent (only 1yr old) • 2006 Nissan 350Z Roadster • 2006 Roush Stage 3 F-150 (2!!) • 2006 Toyota Corolla • 2005 Mazda RX-8 • 1988 Aurora Cobra kit car • 1987 Duntov GT • 1987 Excalibur Autos Phaeton • 1990 Honda CRX (Less than 18 mpg?) • 1985 Maserati Quattroporte • 1999 Mercedes C43 AMG • 1985 TVR 280i convertible

Again, who you vote for is your business, and there are bigger fish to fry than cars issues out there. I'm just stating that this program to this day makes me sick, and this, among other things, will certainly bew on my mind when it's time to vote again.

all that did was generate a glut on the used car market, many Canadian dealers were more than happy to fill with fine used cars from here. in short it raised the price of a decent used car here.....
its so easy to pull the wool over people's eyes

Raised prices here, because of a shortage in supply... The $1000 car is almost non-existent.

People junked their low mpg cars and used the rebates to buy Jeep Patriots and F-150 trucks, and the auto industry had some good months in the middle of a recession. But the union workers still won't vote for Obama. The big stock-holders in GM and Ford still won't vote for Obama. The people who put the environment as their top priority would have voted for Obama anyway. It doesn't seem to have been a politically useful move.

Couldn't have said it better.
I saw this on our local news about a year ago. Kind of ironic, at 1:49 and 2:23 in the video there's a clear shot of an Obama sticker in the back window. I thought these vehicles were bad. I was pretty confused after I saw this. I'll bet when my car hits half a million miles I won't get a story 'cause it won't have a sticker like that.

Hard to beat a good Suburban of that vintage. We had a 96 and a 98. That is funny about the Obama sticker... If it was up to them we'd all be driving a Prius.....

Not sure where you got the list, but there are no Aspires or Accents in the actual database.

I pulled that list a long time ago....I think off AutoBlog or Jalopolink. Have had it saved for a while, and was cleaning out my Outlook files....and it pissed me off all over again.

Not that many if you think about it. There were more than twice as many 1997 Ford Exploders turned in as there were six years' worth of B-bodies.

Yeah but I could give a flying flip about Exploders... Did you see the Impala SS's listed. The horror.....

Yup, 142 out of almost 70,000 made, and I've seen plenty out there that are beat to hell . The '96 Caprice wagons are more of a horror; that's almost five percent of production!
BTW, those are in the database as "Caprice/Impala." I assumed they were all Impala SSes, but considering there were database entries for "Caprice/Impala wagon," some of what I listed as SSes may not be.

Those numbers make me just plain sick. Also one of the rare vehicles clunked was a Dodge Dakota convertible. There were only a couple thousand of those built. I really want to know just how stupid you have to be to trade in a new car for a measly $4500, or less!
