| Hey guys:
I bought a low-mile Goodwrench 4L60E for my caprice, and I am curious what they mean exactly when they say it has "all the updates"? What got updated on one between 1994 and 2005 or so when this one was reman'ed?
Thanks | |

| He's talking about hard parts, not software. Joel will know... | |

Pardon? There is no software in the transmission. The software is in the PCM, in the car. Jayoldschool is correct, I'm wanting to learn what GM thought needed upgrading along the line, even though GM didn't remanufacture transmissions themselves. I guess I'll wait for Joel to show up....

| I would not recommend a Thailand visit for that...
I have not disassembled a Service Replacement Transmission Assembly (SRTA) in awhile. I have one in my 9C1 which I disassembled, inspected and beefed up a few years after I got it. I need to open it up again and check it now that I think of it... anyway:
The best thing about GM (such as Goodwrench or AC Delco) transmissions is the warranty. They are a bulk manufacturing operation and their business is statistics. So you get a warranty and it is sized such that by the end of the warranty, only a certain number will fail, and that is baked into the price. It is certainly not like an aftermarket builder like Carolina Performance Transmission that carefully builds each one so IT doesn't fail.
Sounds like you got one from somebody else, so I guess the warranty is up. If they tell you it has "all the updates" then you need to call them up and get them to tell you what those are. Otherwise, treat it like any other 4L60E: 1. Don't let it shift too softly as this will wear out the clutches. 2. Don't let it shift too harsh or it'll break hard parts. 3. Change the fluid on a regular basis to keep it clean.
For more info, there's a "how to make your 4L60E more durable and live longer" thread over on the ISSF.

Thanks I certainly don't know all the updates, but some are: redesigned reactional sunshell (after market "beast" sunshell is better), different molded apply pistons, different servos pistons as well as springs, improved "oil slinger" on lower planetary (I would use the the 5-pinion out of the 65e anyway), updated valve body seperator plate (kind of a cheap, low grade shift kit). Hope that helps.
