| Justin, have you ever flushed out your heater core? There's a good chance that may be your problem. Feel the hoses going into your heater core; if one is hot and the other is cold, time to flush. It also could be your thermostat.

Tom C. Ahhhh. Is that not what is supposed to happen? If both were the same temperature, then thats when I would suspect the heater core is being bypassed. Aren't heat exchangers supposed to extract heat? If in fact the core is totally plugged then yes, the return hose would be cold (or cooler) but than there would be no flow at all. Bill

| Not always, the anti freeze flows through fast enough so you don't lose all that much heat on the return.
It might be a bite colder, but not cold. If its cold on the return, the core is plugged. Thats from my experience anyway.

Tom C. Tom, I've never done it, and I gave a quick flip thru the service notes of the previous owner (worth the price of the car, imo) and it doesnt seem to have ever been done. It just hit 129k, I figure its about due... I don't think its the thermostat as that was replaced about 2k ago when I did the intake manifold gaskets. Yay another project.

| If you can grab the top rad hose after driving the car, it is the thermostat. Speaking from experience on my 92 (and having replaced a core on my SS). | |

I'll have to check tonight. I'll probably be taking the wagon to Christmas dinner tonight filled with presents and food. I'm like a modern day Santa in a '93 Caprice EDIT: Just drove the car about 6 miles after running some errands. The top rad hose is warm to the touch, but not so hot that you can't touch it. So i'm lookin at a thermostat?

Perhaps that would also explain why my temp gauge always hovers just above "C"

| Ah, yes. Exact same symptoms as my 92. I drove it for two winters like that before getting off my lazy ass and taking 5 minutes to swap to a good t stat. I was rewarded immediately with blazing heat. A nice side benefit was better gas mileage. | |

| Really, better mpg's? How does a T-stat equate to gas mileage? Either way, sweet as I averaged a lovely 14mpg this week | |

the o2's also control open loop,.thats why they are heated,to switch it over quicker..usually works out to 120-130deg water temp,.? iirc,. but there are 4-5 parameters that need to be met,. temp,. gear selection,.iat, o2's something else i forget,. nick

| Only the 1994 has two hoses coming from the top of the overflow tank. 1995 and 1996 deleted hose #5 going to the radiator. | |

| Swapped out the t-stat in about 15 mins while the flakes were flying (12-18" due tonight) buttoned the car up, no leaks, and nice warm heat. I'll flush the core come spring as the heat could be warmer imo, but its a vast improvement over what I had. | |

Me too. That being said, the temp gauge still doesnt work. It still sits at C, even after driving for awhile.

| On the LT1, the temperature gauge is a different system than the thermostat temperature sensor. I don't know if it's the same on your car.
It's probably a bad sender.

| Unplug the wire from the sender, stick a jumper into the wire plug, and ground it to the engine. The needle should go to max temperature. If it doesn't, the problem is the sender.
I needed to buy three before I got a good one. The first one was the wrong model, the second was DOA.
