I know we just had a thread on this, but I can't find it.. Anywho, i'm bored with my 15x8 truck rims. I've been thinking about vette rallys again. Or some Cragar Nomad's or Soft-8's. Ideally, what size rim and backspacing should I be looking at to prevent or minimize rubbing? I currently have 235/70 tires on my rims.

Hey I like the truck Rallys! BUT if you want something else, get these!

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/pts/3251592582.html - Correct bolt pattern for our wagons, with trims, centers and lug nuts. Such a deal here!!!

Surely we could figure out shipping! Wink

The widest rims you can run without having a rubbing issue are about 9-9 1/2 inches. If you go to a 255 tire, 9 is about the limit. Backspacing should be 1/2 of the rim width, plus 3/8-1/2 inch. If you rub on one side, you may have to shift your body on the frame, because many of the cars are poorly aligned. With the narrower tires and rims, they do not have a problem. With wider rims, the sides of the tires balloon, and take up more space, then you get the rubbing.

So... let's say, with a 15x8 rim on 235 tires I need about a 4" backspace?

I can't imagine 4 rims from TX to MA are going to be cheap to ship. Mad Razz

But those are EXACTLY what I want. But summit has em for $45 each and shipping on 4 is $12.95, Laughing

Half of 8 is 4. 4 + 1/2 is 4 1/2.

There's the issue. No 4.5" Rallye rims. Only 4" or 5" in 15x8, and most of the other rims that DO have a 4.5 BS in 15x8 are way out of my price range.

With the 8 wide inch rims you can probably get away with the 4 inch. It would be the same as using a 9 inch rim with 5 inch backspacing. The 4 inch backspacing would give you a slightly wider stance, and I would go with the wider stance. Because you can run 255s on a 9 inch rim, you could probably even run 255s on it, and not touch. The front tires would have less of a possibility of hitting the frame/sway bar, and the brakes would be opened up a little for cooling air as well.

If you are going to install drop spindles, You should go with the 5 inch backspacing for the front because of the 1/2 inch wider track that the spindles give. Just be careful that the rims do not hit the brake parts.

255s are awfully close from what I saw of Sprocket's wagon, Ruby.

Doable, sure, but I do recall he said they rubbed sometimes on hard cornering. Justin just bought tires though, so no worries on the wider tires I suppose.
