PostSubject: Horn weak on '95 Roadmaster and Adding Aux. Jack to Radio   Horn weak on '95 Roadmaster and Adding Aux. Jack to Radio Icon_minitimeSun Oct 07, 2012 11:40 pm

As soon as I first drove my '95, I noticed the horn was really weak. The '93 I have has a "normal" sounding horn. I looked, and see that the '95 uses a single plastic horn about 1/2 as big as the dual horns on the '93. What's the easist fix?

Also, has anyone on this board put an auxiliary input jack on the factory AM/FM/Cassette radio on a '95? I've seen many threads on various forums about this, but not for the same radio that the '95 Buick Roadmaster and other GM cars used in that era. Also, it is not necessary to buy the "kit" for doing this if someone has info on which wires and where they are to connect the jack to.

I don't know if it's your problem, but a weak horn could be a poor ground.

It's not a poor ground. As I stated, the horn is a tiny plastic device located near the hood latch. Instead of an outlet that looks like a trumpet, it has a series of holes about the size of a pencil to emit the sound from the mechanism. It's very weak.

I think I'll transfer the horns from my '93 to the '95 when I move the trailer hitch and wire harness.

Your car should have two "normal" looking horns in the driver side fender right next to the air filter box. It's the same set up that the tbi ('91-'93) cars use. The plastic piece near the hood latch might be your temp. sensor.

Agreed, my '96 Roady had the same two horns in the driver's front fender that my '92 OCC has. Your car may have been in an accident sometime in the past and the factory horns were not replaced. I've seen fly-by-night body shops buy a cheap universal horn rather than replacing factory parts.

Regardless, you should have two horns on the drivers/front fender....and it's really easy to add two more to the passenger fender from a Roady sedan or Fleetwood if you want to give the car the real 4-note tugboat horn it deserves! Smile

As for the radio, have seen these modded and sold on Ebay but have no do-it-yourself info. Sorry on that one!

Yes, the two are under the driver's fender next to the air cleaner box. Need to take apart air cleaner box to even check if both are working.

You're right, the front center plastic device may be the temp. sensor.

For what it's worth I put an aux jack in my '99 Olds Aurora a few years back. If there's any interest I could check my records for the how-to.

In a nutshell, the Delco radio has a Sanyo cassette deck riding piggyback. There are known pinouts for L, R and Grd. Tap into those and run wires to a jack in the dash and you're good to go.

I had bought one of the kits which taps into the CD changer. One in the Avalanche worked fine. Never got it to work in the Aurora and went the hardwire route.

One way of enabling your factory radio to play from another device, you might consider a Redirad

It's an antenna interrupter. Unplug the antenna lead from your radio and insert the Redirad inline between the antenna and the radio. Anytime a device that will accept a 3.5mm pin is plugged in, the antenna is disabled and your device plays through the radio. Hide the pin, and no one will know. The Redirad requires only a hot (switched) wire and a ground.

The horn mechanism can be adjusted. There's a reverse torx head screw on the body of the horn that's used to adjust it. The service manual has a procedure and all you need as I recall is an ammeter to set it properly. 10A may not be enough however, a 20A or better ammeter is what I'd recommend. Also hearing protection would probably be a good idea.

The Roadmaster sedan has 4 horns. If you want to get noticed get the other pair from a sedan and wire it up in parallel with the stock pair. It installs in the same way in the same space inside the other fender.
