| I'm picturing these with new RWL Radial T/A's and Olds Rocket center cap decals... These are really close to me, right bolt pattern, and I've liked these since I saw my first SS454 pickup. I think they look good on wagons and would change the look just enough to make it seem less grandma-ish... I'm close to nabbing these this weekend....really thinking about it.... http://killeen.craigslist.org/pts/3315990916.html | |

Jim Payday is Friday Jim. We do what we can with what we have. On the upside there are two more sets for sale up in Dallas if these sell. Lots out there. I've really been debating...I like the stock Olds wheels, but want to change the look of the car. I really don't want to go aftermarket, Olds SSII's do not fit without adaptors, and I would go with Impala SS wheels, but....I've done that already. Want something different. I like the chrome...shiny is good. We'll see if he still has them Saturday. -Mike

Shoot I'm jealous of all the LT1 guys! It's amazing how much I miss that motor. You know what I'm going to do....I'm going to fix this OCC up just the way I want it, get it in nearly perfect cosmetic and mechanical shape....and then sell it for less than I have in it. I always do this.....get a car really nice and then something else comes along I have to have. An LT1 Roady wagon or 96 Impala SS will show up that I HAVE to buy, and the For Sale sign will go on the OCC. For now I'm having fun with the OCC, and will save everything I take off in case the next owner wants to go back to stock. -Mike

Yep I've considered that. I've got to find an OBD 1 scanner and find out why the Check Engine light comes on in this car. Autozone and the local oil-change place only have OBD II scanners. The mileage is really bad compared to what I got in my Roadmaster with the LT1. I KNOW it's a 350 with a towing rear axle, but I thought with the TBI it would get similar mileage to the LT1. I'm thinking there has to be something wrong somewhere. It runs great most of the time, but on occasion it seems to lurch when I let off the gas, and sometimes the idle stumbles while sitting at a light in gear. Other than that it's smooth with lots of power. I'm going to change the oil, flush the cooling system and install a new thermostat this weekend, followed by a big under-hood detailing job...and I have to finish the 4-note horn conversion still. Projects! -Mike

| You do have an OBD 1 scanner but you just forgot about it: I have an occasional EGR related code that trips the light every once in a while. Code 32 I believe. | |

Gaaaaak! Say it ain't so, that poor wagon is a baby! - 81X11 wrote:

Good luck with that. A proper OBD I scanner seems to be properly expensive as well. (...though if anyone knows differently with a true off-the-shelf scanner, I am listening...) The paperclip trick is wonderful and I see someone beat me to suggesting it. Have a notepad handy, as the blinks go by kind of quickly. Or at least they do for me. Each digit of the code gets repeated three times. "12" is the initial code and indicates that the computer is alive. Each subsequent code is then replayed depending upon how many times it was stored. I've noticed that these particular GM systems are sensitive to exhaust leaks just about anywhere. - 81X11 wrote:

What is the mileage? I know you posted the complete specs of the wagon, but what is the rear axle ratio? When I had the major exhaust leak on my own wagon (also a TBI 350), and not long after it become much much worse, the car would sometimes stumble at idle or when I gave it gas while in gear. I think you might want to put some oxygen sensors on your list. And oh by the way, since I am such a nice guy...if that wagon should ever become too much of a burden, just dial up the board and shoot me a PM. Have wagon, have extra drivers, will travel, and will rescue unwanted whales. (I know this isn't going to work and am mainly posting it for a laugh, but I sure can try at least!)

| The 350 has plenty of power, the LT1 just seemed smoother and had MORE power. Plus I miss the dual exhaust and the LT1 with 2.93's got better mileage than this OCC with 3.23 rear. I'm getting under 20mpg on the highway and far worse in the city.
I could go two weeks on a tank in the Roady but the Olds only gets me a week-and-a-half, max. BUT I've done nothing to the engine yet, and the Check Engine light comes and goes, so hopefully I can get up in the MPG with some tweaking.
It's funny, on the trip back from North Carolina, the first tankful was the best mileage of the trip...was in the low 20's. It dropped the rest of the trip...but I do think those first few miles I was babying the car....
Anyway we'll see. Other than the overheating issue on the way to San Antonio the other weekend, the car has been reliable as the sun.

| Well yeah the LT1 has more power, almost 100 hp more. The 350 is only 180hp. The LT1 is what, 270?
With the bad MPG's I'd just go in and give it a full tune up, plugs, wires, cap, ICM, EGR and a new O2. I did that over the summer and it was like a whole new car.

hard to find early to mid 70s olds poly cast sport wheels for the full sized olds 88 holiday coupes, convertibles and even on the customcruisers. it's a standard 15X7 5 on 5 steel wheel with a poly cast resin insert bonded to the rim. same material used for them flexible fender extentions and front facias on camaros firebirds corvettes and gto's. they are hard to find cause in the south they dry rotted and cracked then fell apart, and in the north the rim would rust under the poly resin cause gm used raw unpainted steel since the poly cast would bond better. GM had poly cast wheel on monte carlos, fire birds olds and a few others, ford had some too.

A tool that doesn't work on the OBD1 LT1 cars, sadly. As for the MPGs on the OCC, Mike. You need to do a complete tune up. Wouldn't surprise me if the parts currently on it are original.

Previous owner spent over $1000 at the local Buick dealer in South Carolina doing a tune-up...and a ton of work that wasn't needed. It was less than 8K miles ago, but in 2008.
