| So now that I got the Denali done my next project is getting the rear bumper on the Custom Cruiser re-painted. The car was in a carport in North Carolina most of it's life, and the rear end faced the sunset. The bumper is the only bad paint on the car. BUT I want to pick you folks brains. I take 4-5 kids to school every morning in this car (some days Misty takes Tuck for me), and the two older teenage boys always ride in the 3rd row seat. The black bumper pad covers abour 85% of the top of the rear bumper....any idea what I could do to protect the 15% that's painted? I can yell at those kids about only stepping on the black pad when they get in and out...but they're teenagers... If I spend the money to re-shoot the bumper, I want to keep it nice. Any ideas? Possibly something like people put on pickup bedrails?? I'm just brainstorming.... And PLEASE do not say 3M Clearbra..... -Mike

| Nothing you really can do... Keep wax on it so it has something protecting it. Or a 3M clear bra.... | |

| Oh geesh louise, Mike you'll have to scrap the wagon. so send it north to one of our members who could part it out and we can all benefit from the rare parts.....
or you can paint it then use that 3M clear bra

| Mike
SEM makes paint for the bumper cover. Give Vinyl Pro a call, they'll be looking for a code.

| Actually Mike 3M makes a cPaint Protection Films that will work perfectly for you. It is used along rocker panels and is clear.
So head to the local napa or paint store and ask for protective stone shield protector. They have different thicknesses and Gloss levels.

Is this what I just scraped off the hood of the Denali - repackaged? I talked to my paint guy and he said once he paints it to NOT put anything on the paint for at least a month. Will paste before-and-after bumper pics of course. -Mike

| Yeah the glue from the film will react with the fresh paint. He is correct. As for what you took off your Denali I'm not sure. | |

| Appointment made. I drop the car off tomorrow and will get it back tues-wed next week. They are going to sand and paint the rear bumper and the lower rear 1/4 trim, just to make sure the color and gloss match perfectly where they touch each other.
Will be lecturing all my kids about ONLY stepping on the black rubber part of the upper bumper.
Pics to follow.

| I just like the phrase, clear bra, clear bra.clear bra a truly great combination of words that bring to mind such a beautiful picture!Hey Mike, why dont you get another bumper pad from the JY and after the paint cures cut the new pad and cover a larger area of the bumper and then tell the kids that they MUST STEP only here and no where else! CLEAR BRA! |

| No ClearBra for my car! I'm going to lecture the kids A LOT about only stepping on the black bumper pad when they get in and out. We'll see how long it lasts. At the very least the flat back and sides of the bumper will look a lot better! Oh and this is funny. Dad told me he drove past the body shop Saturday afternoon and there were two guys standing behind the Cruiser pointing at my Save the Whales and Wally World stickers and smiling. -Mike | |

| Tick.....Tock......Tick............Tock. I keep waiting for the call that the car is ready to pick up. It's supposed to be done today or tomorrow. It took all my energy to NOT go by the body shop yesterday...I really want to see how it's coming... Ring Phone Ring!! -Mike | |

| I'll be re-painting the spare tire well as soon as I get the car back. It's been pecked-up since I bought the car....you could see white paint under the black...but thankfully it's not rusty.
Now I just need to get it home. Hope it comes out well!

| Thats what I meant. No good reason for the back glass to be open except when sanding is being done inside the gate opening.Mikes going to have to spend a few days just cleaning up the interior when he gets it back. All this work because the body guy isnt taking any pride in his work or caring about the customer! |

| Yeah I was going to ask why the window was open but didn't want to be rude....maybe they are opening the door for paint codes or something?? At any rate, you know I'll detail the car to the hilt this weekend. On the upside when I got there at lunch they were cooking out, and I got some good BBQ ribs for free. | |

| It's weird paint. Shines and has a lot of sparkle in it, but it not a smooth-like-glass gloss. We talked about it and he said GM used this paint on a lot of 90's vehicles for the lower body cladding. The gloss matches the door and front bumper trim pretty much perfectly. Car looks SOO much better from the back now. They did mix flex additive in it, so hopefully the kids climbing in and out won't hurt it. He did say to leave it parked in the sun about a week and also not to wax it for a month. Lifetime warranty against cracking or fading. Works for me! Next...RWL tires. -Mike

$225. I only paid $160 at my friend's place to have the front bumper stripped and re-painted on Misty's Denali, and that was a lot more work, but I was not happy with how it came out and made him do it again. Did not want to have to worry about the Olds so I took it to another place I use. A little more expensive, but done well the first time, and they even detailed the car for me. It's spotless! -Mike

Pray-tell what do you think the "life" of the paint on the bumper would be. I havnt looked at every wagon made but pretty much anyone I've seen has rear pumper paint cracking or wear.

I'll be keeping this one waxed and the car is garaged at home, so hopefully it'll last a long time. It IS my daily driver so it'll be in the work parking lot roasting all summer...will try to get to work early amd park under the trees in the shade. I've yet to see an OCC that was not faded on the rear bumper. I don't think that gray held up well over time. -Mike

Dang I forgot... On the upside I'm taking the Dodge Ram over there on Monday at noon. Finally fixing the rear 1/4 where some a-hole hit it in the Wal-Mart parking lot last summer, and then ran off without leaving a note. I'd just given my Dad the truck and this happened less than a week after. It's bothered me every time I've gone over to my folks house! Dad gave me a ride in the Dodge to pick up the Olds wagon at noon today, and I asked Mike the body guy for an estimate to fix the dent. He said he'd give me a "frequent flyer" discount and quoted a really low price, so it's going in the shop Monday. Will ask about the Olds paint code then...

In fact it has happened once. I was an a-hole about it. When will I learn? Dick It does have a lot of sparkle to it when you look straight down on the upper bumper area, but in the sunlight it matches the sides and front bumper really well. The pics make the paint look like it's rough...it's not, it's smooth, but the clear is pretty deep. Hopefully it will hold up to all my kids. Oh and good deal on the new arm rest...I REALLY want one for my OCC! I always check every car in the salvage yards, but so far have not found a good one. I agree that the pull-out dash cupholder is pretty pitiful on these TBI cars. The flip-out armrest one on my '96 Roady was fantastic...would hold a big-gulp tight. As for yelling at your wife over car issues.....yeah, I've been there..often.

Thanks! It's safe in my garage right now. Misty made fun of me just a bit ago. When I got home I didn't come in the house. She found me sitting on a folding chair in the driveway looking at the Cruiser in the garage... Called me a dork... I can't help it! I've wanted to fix this since the day I bought the car. Little victories! -Mike
