Both of those buses have aftermarket a/c. It IS Texas, gotta have it. The grills are for a/c condensors. When I worked at the a/c shops we did a lot of those installs. Had to run a/c hoses to the back, and normally the evap and vents were mounted to the rear roof or one lower side, depending on if it was a camper or not. On the newer Vanagons the a/c ran in a strip down the middle of the roof. Such fun! -Mike

Such fun!
-Mike Considering that huge front end and VWs lack of any real horsepower, using the AC would require dropping a gear and mashing the gas just to turn the compressor over! |

But by virtue of the raised roof, both appear to be Type II T2c’s, especially the white one with the most recent front doors (note the additional reveal on the lower edge). They are more likely the Mexican or South American water cooled versions that were brought here. Not that Texas is geographically closest to those places, or anything. And Wiki is still your friend if you need to check. They made them in 2005/2006 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Brazilian_Watercooled_Kombi.jpghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Brazilian_Kombi_pair.jpg

The picture of the two side by side are 2005 and 2006 models. A water cooled diesel version was built in Brazil from 1981-85, and production of the gasoline variant started in Mexico in 1991 and Brazil in 1995. They're still being made, with production scheduled to end 12/31/2013 because they don't meet new Brazilian safety regulations.
