| ok,... if you were trying for flames,...... the bike fender sucks,. looks like a a piece of leopard hide,.but still kinda eye catching,. i think it needs a coat of metalflake clear now,. it would be an interesting design,. the lower set is getting better,. when you use the stencil stop trying to paint all the way around it,. just use 1 half here and there,.its too busy, ease up on the amount of overlapping etc,. fade some more,. and add some reds and purples, and lighter yellows,..but i must say i can see the potential you have,.especially with just the two colors,. with some more practise,. you'll get better,. take a peek at the art work on my wagon,. or google mike lavalee's true life flames,.i think you are doing well for first tries,. certainly better than me,. if there's no numbers to cover up, i can't paint, Nick link here for you http://www.dixieart.com/Freehand_True_Fire_Templates_by_Mike_Lavallee.html

| The first one does not look like flames, but it does have an interesting depth to it. As for the second one, I can not tell which way the flames are supposed to go. I appears that you have the flow going left and right | |

| Keep at it Jarod. Don't be mad at Nick for being honest, because for the most part - he's right.
You're getting much better though. Let's see test panel #3!

| For a first attempt, you did well. . Somehow I suspect you are not pleased that it is not at a pro level. That what practice is for, so don't kick yourself or beat up on yourself too much. (yet)
You asked for honest evaluation, But keep in mind I'm not a painter either, just an observer of nature. (Being drunk at many campfires helps the observation skills. )
To me, the fender says "repeating pattern" or stencil, instead of "random flame motion". It's more semi-circles than french curves or flames. Attempt two is better, more randomness, but still pattern based.
Flames have a base where it's hottest (white) and more solid, then cooler colors as they go away from the base. To me, that's why it needs the fill of white at the "base", (which is to the left?) so the flames won't be so transparent there, then moving to yellow, orange, red as they go away to become less "solid" and more gaseous.
Maybe Nick has some closeup shots that he could post up, of the flames on the side of his car, That would help you see things in detail better. Hopefully you've found this constructive and helpful, as it was intended, and not just my being a critical jerk dumping on you.
(Keep in mind when my wife calls me an arrogant self-centered condescending balding bastard, she is lying. I am NOT going bald.)
Dave

| Oh yeah I'm not going to get mad at what anyone has to say, that is why I put it up.
I'm a pure rookie when it comes to airbrushing so any views are fien with me. But now for my third attempt I have learned so much since my first attempt. Getting better one attempt at a time.

| I love the depth of all of them. The most recent one certainly has the most realistic look to it.
And all of them are far better than anything I could do! Keep at it!

| the last panel is good,. the more random the better,. these flames are gentle slow speed flamres not agitated by oxygen too much,. kinda exactly what i did NOT want on my wagon,.. but they really do look like a snapshot of a fire,.flames,. now to try and whip those flames into a fast flowing fire, brighter hotter etc,.. well done they look good,.

| WELL THANK YOU NICK! I have this same thread posted on an air brush forum and they are straight forward as you Nick. Which I don't mind. I do think I need to do more fill in work and not have all of the flames transparent. Just things to work on in my book. Well until I try some more, the airbrush goes away for a bit. I need to get some work done, and bring in some cash.
THANKS to everyone for there input.
To be continuied..........................

| Well I seem to be falling asleep thinking about flames and waking up the same way. So this it is my lastest attempt at my own style. I have to say I like this look. Now mind you it is just the base color and the other colors will make this pop. So what do you guy's think now. I think I have improved through trial and error rather quickly. If this door was on the truck the flames would be more concetrated on the fender, where the whiter hotter flames would be. | |

| Jarod -
Go get a copy of Rides where it shows Mike Lavalee actually painting a '34 Ford from start to finish.
You appear to still be working from the top down as you add more detail, but Mike starts from the back and works forward, supplementing the red-orange base with brighter colors to add strength to to source.
That's most likely why your not getting the effect you want.
Also, Mike uses more freehand and less template than I see here.
Basically he freehands the wisps, and adds more template as he moves forward.
I bet once you see the video, your following attempt will be substantially improved.

| I see what your saying Jay, but I choose not to look at Mike's work. I want to try and discover my own style so i'm not copying someone elses work,.... anyone can do that. Thanks a million I really see what your talking about with the stenciling. I will try and keep it more towards the front and only airbrush the flicks at the end. See now this is why I want feedback. | |

i hear what you're saying about worrying about being a copycat,. but i,ve looked at literally thousands of flamed artworks,. and styles are often similar,. but you can tell different guys did similar things,. In my case i wish i could find an artist that would create the flames I want as the customer,.not some fukking prima donna that thinks i,m lucky to have his work on my car,..(GGGRRRR)now i,m mad all over again,...... INMHO a decent commercial artist would use their talent to help someone create their particular vision,. with a little of their style thrown in the mix,..I,m sure such an artist would be in demand,.. A really good tru fire painter,. would likely ask you what part of the vehicle was on fire and add the flame type/color/style accordingly,. i.e different heat ranges,. speed of the vehicle while on fire etc,. all adds up to a more realistic flame job,.again dependant on the customers vision,..i was mortified with the flames on the hood and roof of my car,. i should have had someonelse add cartoon characters with sticks and weiners to the scene, they looked like lazy purple blue camp fire flames on the front fenders mixed up with the ugly caliper fires mixed up with the shitty water on oil smudges pretending to be the flames on the hood,. nothing seemed to work together,. and it definitely wasn't what i had so eloquently explained that i wanted,. ah fuckit,. enough about me,. keep practising,. buy mike lavallee's dvd,. watch how he uses the stencils,.. then cultivate your own style,.. Nick looking for the whetstone,.......

| Nick it's to bad the artist didn't create a test panel for you to see if they could even achieve the look you wanted. That is what I would do so as to not have this problem you are speaking of. Some people do it for the money not for the love of it and hold you captive with a bill.
Anyway i'm off to try it again, I think I am gaining on my style.

| http://connerycustompaint.com/new_flames.htmlthese are the guys that did my flames,. you'll see the recurring pattern in all of their work on vehicles,. as you'll notice everything has the caliper fire style flames,. and after i picked my car up,. i was told,. 1,. i knew nothing about flames,. 2,. they knew far more about flames than i did,. 3<. thats the way we do it,.. this all told to me after 2 expensive lunch dates to discuss what i wanted,.. if you notice the tow truck,. thats the paint style i wanted,.white starting 'hot' flames,. strictly from the leading edge of the hood flowing back over the fender,. last licks to be ending at just below the mirrors,. and matching 2ft of roof,. this business is still not over,.. | Good work Jarrod. I have watched this thread and am quite impressed. Here is my take on flames, whick I love BTW. They were actually invented,or copied from bad situations that somehow became cool. I persomally think if the object is big like a car old school flames are the way to go. From Nick's buddys work. the less detail the better. Theas are what real flames look like. Who can see the detail? But wait a minute. Put them on a helmet, motor cycle tank,or something small and yes, they need detail Thats all. Keep up the good work. Lorne. | |

| Yeah I'm an old school flame kind of guy as well, Lorne. But I see around my area that there are 2 vehicles running around with what they think are true flame looking paint jobs and they suck just like my 2nd attempt. So I want to slap them in the face with some flames done right. That is the reason for trying these and getting them done right.
And LMAO off to the Buddy coment. Nicks bleeding out fast right now.
