So to give a little back story to this post, for the past 3 months I've been fooling with and wasting time on a 1999 Volvo V70 wagon before conceding that Volvo intended for nobody other than the dealer should ever be able to resolve problems.
I quickly sold it at a slight loss, and began looking around on Craigslist to see if something interesting was there that would soothe my wounds (and also use the money before I wasted it on bills and eating out).
Lo and behold, I saw an ad for a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser. To summarize the ad, there were some nice pictures, didn't run, seller did not want it worked on in his yard, price was firm.
After an email exchange, the story was essentially that he bought it 2-1/2 years ago with intentions to swap in an Olds V8. That never happened, and the car just sat. He said it ran but not well. He would let us bring a battery and try to get it running.
Since this thing was 150 miles away, I had to go get the truck, load it, rent a trailer on the fly all while staying in phone contact with the seller to keep him reassured that we were coming, since he had several people waiting to come look at it.
We got there, and he had the car pushed out ready to go but it would not run except off starting fluid. I paid the seller his price, got the title and BOS, winched it on the trailer and got out of there.
After I had time to check it over, I found that I had a solid wagon with several broken vacuum lines, otherwise original engine compartment down the smog pump, and an empty gas tank even though the gauge claims otherwise.
It's a 231 V6, TH250 trans(think light-duty TH350, not the metric trans). Like just about any good rwd GM, all it needed to run was a battery and gas even after 28 months.
I'm currently giving it some love where it needs it...the carb is getting overhauled and a couple coolant hoses replaced, then it's drive the wheels off time.
Here's some videos:
